Position Overview

The School of Music at The Ohio State University seeks to hire a 9-month non-tenure-track Visiting Assistant Professor of Violin starting August 15, 2024. This appointment is initially for one year, with a possibility of renewal for an additional two years.

The violin artist will have demonstrated evidence of successful teaching in higher education and a representative record of professional performance experience. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in enriching the student experience of violin studies at Ohio State through providing teaching and mentorship to students as they pursue a diverse range of academic and professional goals. Candidates should demonstrate performance expertise within the standard canon and beyond. Performance Objectives

  • Participate in School of Music activities, attracting and retaining violin students, and faculty governance.
  • Maintain a professional profile as a violinist through performances, recordings, publication, presentation, scholarship, and/or research/creative activity.
  • Engage and lead activity in professional organizations in the field.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate violinist majors.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required: Master of Music required; Doctor of Musical Arts preferred. We are seeking candidates who, in addition to maintaining an active performance career, will demonstrate potential for a strong creative and scholarly profile, a commitment to engagement with relevant organizations within the string instrument community, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse body of students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The School of Music seeks a collaborative colleague with the ability to contribute to the intellectual and cultural life of the Strings Area, the School of Music, and the University.

Desired: Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to building a culturally diverse intellectual community in line with OSU’s Shared Values (see below).

The School of Music, housed in the new Timashev Family Music Building, is home to a faculty of nationally and internationally recognized performing artists, composers, scholars, and master teachers who are specialists in their fields. The faculty serves a student body of approximately 300 undergraduate and 90 graduate music majors, as well as hundreds of non-music majors who are pursuing music minors, taking classes, or participating in one of the many performance ensembles.
