Description:
Schmid College of Science and Technology at Chapman University seeks applicants for a non-tenure track, full-time Instructional Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Organic Chemistry Lab Coordinator, effective Summer 2024.   This is a full-time, non-tenure track position that requires work to be performed in the State of California and has in-person teaching responsibilities and required on-campus availability at Chapman’s Orange campus.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will coordinate and teach in the Organic Chemistry laboratory sections within the Schmid College of Science and Technology with potential future teaching in the Organic Chemistry lecture. These courses are taken by chemistry majors and other majors across campus.  Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and teach Organic Chemistry laboratory sections. Current course descriptions are available at https://catalog.chapman.edu.
  • Recruit and train part-time faculty who teach in the Organic Chemistry Laboratory sections.
  • Work with faculty teaching in the Organic Chemistry sequence to implement improvements in the laboratory course design.
  • Actively contribute to program activities and engage with the vibrant community of chemistry and biochemistry faculty and students.
  • Actively contribute as an integral member of Schmid College of Science and Technology in the ongoing development, implementation, and assessment of our academic and degree programs.
  • Perform service to the unit, college, university, profession, and wider community as expected of an instructional faculty member.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field conferred by the start date. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence in education and willing to contribute to the University Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plan.
  • Evidence of effective teaching in higher education at the undergraduate level, particularly in core chemistry courses such as organic chemistry and general chemistry. 
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
Desired Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a strong record of effective teaching in undergraduate level organic chemistry laboratory and lecture courses and general chemistry. 
  • Experience with implementation of innovative teaching practices in the lecture and laboratory environments.
  • Experience using technology to enhance educational environments.
  • Ability to design and implement program and course assessment tools.
  • Experience serving and/or teaching students from underserved communities.

This position is subject to final budget approval. Benefits start the first day of the month following the start of employment. The salary range for this Instructional Assistant Professor position is $75,000-$80,000.
