Job Summary:

The individual in this position will provide vital support to the Autopsy pathologists and neuropathologists on a daily basis. This will involve sending out test requests to various testing facilities, the results which are crucial to the final diagnosis of cases. This individual will track and send "Next of Kin" letters, provisional anatomic diagnoses documents, and other official notifications. Documentation processes, will be tracked so that a database is maintained of what records are generated, by whom, and when.

This individual will maintain and control confidential or classified material. This may involve chain of custody issues and high level secure storage, according to departmental and institutional protocols.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Accession incoming complete or partial Autopsy cases into the Department database. Notify attending and resident physicians in a timely manner of pending cases. Work with Decedent Affairs, to ensure documentation meets all regulatory requirements.
  • Track and participate in completion of autopsy cases, ensuring that the final report has met all of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) requirements. Notify the Medical Director of Autopsy, Dr. Driscoll, of inconsistencies or issues in a timely manner (usually within 24 hours).
  • Manage policies and procedures specific to administrative autopsy services for manual and College of American Pathologists (CAP).
  • Maintain and control confidential or classified material that may come to your attention. This may involve chain of custody issues and high level secure storage, according to departmental and institutional protocols
  • Assists with Neuropathology cases and special projects for Neuropathologists
  • Coordinates testing requests for neuropathology cases with cytology, histology, the clinical laboratory and outside testing facilities

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Autopsy Clinical Support Specialist I:
  • One year of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
    • Certification related to the work assigned to the position will substitute for the required experience. Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Autopsy Clinical Support Specialist II:
  • Two years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
    • Certification related to the work assigned to the position will substitute for the required experience. Appropriate education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Documented administrative experience in a health care / clinical diagnostics lab.
  • Experience calculating lab results and data using math and analytical skills.
  • Experience using MS Word and Excel. Preferred experience will include developing reports, spreadsheets, and databases using the mentioned software programs.
  • Experience entering data into an electronic system.
  • Experience purchasing and maintaining lab supplies.
  • Demonstrated experience with medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism, resourcefulness, tact, and diplomacy are essential.
  • Ability to organize workload and file correctly by alphabetical and numerical order.
  • Highly motivated individual looking to pursue a long-term career in molecular diagnostics.
  • Self-starter that demonstrates the ability to work individually with minimal supervision as well as part of a team of technologists, show proficiency at solving complex problems, and exhibit excellent computer skills (all Microsoft products).
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds which also includes experience working with students, staff, and faculty, within a higher education and/or academic medical environment.
  • Ability to interpret complex rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Ability to listen and follow precise protocols and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize workload, file correctly by alphabetical and numerical order.
  • Must possess a professional demeanor and have experience that demonstrates problem solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated, a fast learner and possess excellent time management, organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to take direction and use independent judgment to coordinate and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and security compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established for each level below:

Autopsy Clinical Support Specialist I: $36,118 - $41,897

Autopsy Clinical Support Specialist II: $50,822 - $58,953

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
