The Department of Clinical Sciences is dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging animal-owning public, government and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health.

The Department of Clinical Sciences is heavily vested in training DVM students, including teaching clinical and surgical skills throughout all four years. This curricular thread has traditionally been shared by faculty from a number of disciplines. While the collaborative nature of this area of curriculum remains a significant strength, the demands of clinical services and the large laboratory footprint associated with clinical skills education have made it increasingly difficult to coordinate the delivery of this essential, complex thread. As the college moves toward curricular revision through the creation of multi-year threads of content, there is an opportunity to expand clinical skills education into a more cohesive, thematic thread. The college is invested in establishing dedicated faculty to build out and coordinate these broader thematic components of the curriculum.

The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has established the Academy of Educators (AOE) to develop, support, recognize and reward the broad community of educators who embrace the educational mission within the college. The Academy supports faculty (in addition to other members of the college) in a variety of ways, including: exposure to best teaching practices, communities of practice and financial support opportunities for educational related innovation, research and travel.

Essential Job Duties:

The CVM is developing a new Community Access/Outreach program that will expand the CVM’s curricular and programmatic involvement in providing resources and services to underserved members of our community. The College will initially staff this program with two new faculty positions.

We are therefore seeking qualified candidates to serve as clinical faculty, with one position listed at the rank of assistant or associate professor, and the second at the rank of assistant professor. These faculty will help shape the program’s vision, define priorities, and identify budgetary needs in collaboration with College leadership and members of our Community Access committee. Existing support includes an existing program budget, mobile hospital and truck, supplies, access to education resources, and veterinary technical staffing.

We have great existing relationships with industry partners who already support our clinical skills labs, and we envision that the new Community Access faculty will further develop and leverage these resources to support the Program. The incumbent faculty will also be expected to apply for grants and work with our Development Office to build sustainable programmatic support.

Successful candidates will provide preclinical teaching (years 1-3) in the veterinary curriculum (e.g., via participation in surgical labs, and contributing to lectures on ethics and business). They will also train 4th year veterinary students on a clinical rotation (training veterinary students in areas such as preventive care, primary care, surgery, and dentistry through partnerships with underserved communities in North Carolina). It will also include oversight of students working in community-based clinics conducted in collaboration with external partners.

These positions provide a critical means for students to gain experience working with a variety of communities, to learn more about how to partner with community organizations, and to engage in the provision of service across the spectrum of care.

Other Responsibilities:

Mentorship of individual students. Service on committees in the Department, College and University, as time permits. Building and maintaining community partners.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • DVM or equivalent degree

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with dogs and cats
  • Demonstrated interest in educational design and clinical training
  • Demonstrated interest in building connections with community partners in order to reach and provide care to underserved populations
  • Excellent clinical skills, with at least 5 years clinical, dental, and surgical experience
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills; awareness of frameworks for effective communication and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere
  • Computer literacy: working knowledge of common word processing, spreadsheet and document editing skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching and/or supervising DVM students in surgery, dentistry and/or clinical skills settings
  • Advanced degree (MS) or certificate credential in education
  • Advanced degree or certificate credential in public health, shelter medicine, or population medicine
  • Experience with low-stress patient handling methodology
  • Prior experience or interest in working with a variety of mixed animal species to include horses, small ruminants, potbelly pigs, etc
  • Evidence of leadership through committee service work, professional organization work, or coordination of a unit or training program

Required License(s) or Certification(s):

  • Candidates must meet requirements for and maintain a veterinary license (or faculty certificate) in the State of North Carolina
  • A valid NC driver’s license must be obtained within 60 days of start date and must be maintained throughout employment
