The Department of Classics and Ancient History is part of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in Durham University, and we were ranked 8th in the 2023 QS World Rankings for Classics. The Department of Classics and Ancient History is one of the very best in the UK, and indeed worldwide, with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching and research. We were ranked joint fourth in the last national research evaluation (REF2021) in terms of the quality of our work. We attract large numbers of exceptionally talented undergraduate, MA, and doctoral students, and we focus on high quality research-led teaching. The Department delivers very high levels of overall student satisfaction. In student-facing guides and league tables we are regularly ranked among the top Classics Departments in the UK. We have a long tradition of excellence in Greek and Latin literature, ancient history and ancient philosophy and the near east.

The Department seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor in Material and Visual Culture. We welcome applications from those with research and teaching interests in the broad field of ancient material and visual culture and we are particularly eager to hear from applicants with a focus on the art, archaeology, and architecture of the Greek world from the bronze age to the end of antiquity. In addition to high quality teaching and research, the successful candidate will be expected to have the willingness or potential to develop quality research grant proposals and Impact Case Studies for the next REF, and to foster links with the Department of Archaeology at Durham.
