Job Summary:

The Grounds Supervisor will supervise the proper care and maintenance of the university grounds, including: lawns, outdoor athletic fields, rental properties, and Park Woods property. The Supervisor will oversee the grounds and recycling staff. As a working supervisor position the Supervisor will perform routine grounds maintenance including mowing, weeding, planting, pruning, raking, applying fertilizer and herbicides/pesticides, aeration, and watering. 



  • Plan, schedule, and keep records of all ground maintenance efforts, including: mowing, irrigation, fertilization, pruning, spraying, and assisting with equipment preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate records for chemical use and maintenance work performed.
  • Inventory and requisition supplies, tools, parts, and chemicals as needed.
  • Implement landscaping plans including; grading, planting, and pruning.
  • Organize and direct all snow removal including; shoveling by hand where needed.
  • Supervise the preparation of seed beds, plantings, and transplanting.
  • Ensure that all grounds care is performed with all safety and applicable regulations taken into consideration, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Inspect all grounds care operations to ensure quality control.
  • Provide and maintain bike racks, outdoor seating and tables.
  • Properly maintain and manage all grounds care for university rental properties, Park Woods property, and Park Cabin.
  • Responsible to maintain and repair university-owned streets, parking lots, and to assist the Director by making recommendations for long-term care and preventative maintenance.
  • Work with the Director of Facilities Management in establishing priorities and making major purchases.
  • Provide budget and capital equipment requirements to the Director of Facilities Management.
  • Develop an annual work plan which identifies goals and expected accomplishments for the year.
  • Assist other Facilities Management staff as requested.
  • Assist Auxiliary Services staff in moving large furniture items and heavy equipment around campus.
  • Participate in setup and preparation for Commencement and Homecoming events.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Attention to detail for accurately preparing and maintaining accurate reports and reviewing the general ledger.
  • Ability to operate various types of power equipment including lawnmowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, tractors, and other landscaping equipment.
  • Ability to use hand tools required for landscaping
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete assignments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of landscaping techniques and processes.
  • Ability to set goals, prioritize and organize job tasks and workload in order to meet deadlines, ability to complete work in a timely manner and communicate progress routinely with the Director of Facilities Management.
  • Interpersonal skills for assisting others and working with coworkers.
  • Ability to use a PC and software such as, Windows, Microsoft Office, and Google.
  • Ability to operate commonly used office equipment such as a copy machine, fax, phone, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with a wide variety of constituents.
  • Outstanding leadership and management skills.
  • Possess valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and motivate staff.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work outside of normal scheduled hours, including nights and weekends.
 Education and Experience:

High school diploma and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

Bachelor’s Degree and experience in a higher education environment is preferred. 


Physical Requirements: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel.   The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.  The employee must occasionally travel to meetings and conferences off campus, which may include some overnight travel.


Supervisory Responsibilities:May supervise 3-4 staff members and work study student workers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
