Job Summary

The Department of History and Geography at Columbus State University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of GIS/Geography. The successful candidate will primarily teach upper and lower division courses in GIS and World Regional Geography courses as well as occasional upper-level courses in cultural and urban Geography. The candidate will serve as the coordinator for the GIS Certificate program and will have considerable scope to help develop and expand the study of GIS in the region. All applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student body. The start date is August 1, 2024.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include: 5/5 teaching load.; The candidate will serve as primary coordinator of the GIS certificate program and supervise GIS internships.; The successful candidate will teach lower and upper division courses in GIS and Geography each semester.; The candidate will mentor and advise students.; The candidate will be able to foster an environment of professionalism and collaboration, work continuously to improve history and geography education, and engage in practices that support the University's focus on student engagement and active learning.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications include: Ability to teach introductory and advanced courses in GIS.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications include: Ph.D. in GIS or Geography preferred. MA with 18 hours in geography/GIS graduate work.; Strong ABD candidates will be considered, but a degree must be in hand by the start date.; University teaching experience.; Experience with community engagement.; The successful candidates will demonstrate potential for continued professional development, scholarship, and community engagement.

Applicants must have the ability to meet Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements, in particular a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline.
