The Center for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Education is within the College of Education and reports directly to the Dean.Job Duties :
The mission and vision of the Center will strengthen the STEM education enterprise by:
1. Improving the quality and quantity of P-12 teachers of science and mathematics;2. Providing strong experiences in science and mathematics for all P-20 students while increasing the number of graduates pursuing careers in STEM disciplines;3. Creating a supportive environment for multidisciplinary research, evaluation, and assessment while bridging the gap between educators and STEM professionals; and4. Encouraging community engagement that leads to increased university partnerships with school districts, business and industry, and the community.
The Director of the Center for STEM Education will be to oversee the management of Center programs and other activities in which the Center participates. Specific duties and responsibilities fall under four broad areas: 1) Program Design and Coordination including existing programs such as Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics and the Advanced Placement Institute as well as new programs that emerge; 2) Program Evaluation; 3) Public Outreach including maintenance of the Center website; and 4) Supervision of staff, temporary and student employees. Other responsibilities to be assigned as needed. In this position, the Director will ensure that the programs in place such as the Summer Venture for Science and Mathematics, STEM Girls, High School STEM Day, the AP Study Day and Institute, Science Olympiad and the education component of the NC Space Grant continue, are well-organized and grow. In addition the Director will respond to requests to participate in other existing programs such as the Kenan Fellowship Program, Sampson County Summer Camp, and the Gateway Technology Workshop. Finally, the Director will participate in needs assessment analysis and design and offer new programs responsive to the identified needs of the area. The Director will assist in the identification and design of assessment instruments, the collection and organization of data and data presentation. Every program offered through the Center will be evaluated using some standard valid and reliable measures and some new and creative measures.Minimum Education/Experience :
The potential for the Center to serve as a clearing house for STEM activities in the region has been acknowledged. A well-designed, maintained and current website is one vehicle for maintaining the clearinghouse. The Director will have oversight of the Center website adding events to keep it current and contributing to and monitoring a STEM Education Blog. The Director also will participate in public events as needed.
Currently a number of undergraduate student workers provide support to the Center by copying documents, making signs and name tags, stuffing envelopes and other such clerical tasks. The Director will aid the Administrative Assistant in supervising these students. The Director also will guide a graduate student assistant in data analysis.
The Director of the Center for STEM Education will oversee the management of Center programs and other activities in which the Center participates. Specific duties and responsibilities fall under these broad areas.
(55%) Provides leadership in the development of implementation of a vision for the Center; manages an active program of research and external funding for the Center; develops innovative programs with post-secondary institutions, schools, and businesses to improve mathematics, science, engineering, and technology education; serves as an organizing point for large scale projects to improve STEM education across educational systems; collaborates with Departmental and University units to advance the research mission of the College of Education and the University; broadens engagement of students and educators in STEM to provide communities with a skilled and STEM literate workforce; influences local, state, and national policies related to P-20 STEM education; facilitates quality STEM opportunities for students and teachers through ongoing workshops, camps, institutes, and outreach events; connects a network of like-minded individuals and partners to create opportunities to develop solutions for the issues related to STEM education; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work a flexible schedule as duties require; and engage in additional duties as required. The Director will lead the program design and coordination of existing programs such as the residential Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics, the Advanced Placement Summer Institute, the Regional ECU Science Olympiad Tournament, as well as new self-sustaining programs that are expected to be developed. Supervision of staff, temporary and student employees is required. In this position, the Director will ensure that the programs currently in place continue, are well-organized, and grow. Other responsibilities will be assigned as needed.
(10%) The Director is responsible for maintaining and overseeing the Center’s budget and maintains the STEM center as a financial self-supporting unit; Additionally, the Director will be responsible as the direct report for personnel within the Center. The Director will produce annual and time-sensitive reports.
(35%) The Director will be tasked with writing grant proposals, executing funded programs, and conducting program evaluations. The Director will assist faculty in identifying opportunities for external funding; collaborate and provide support for STEM education projects, grants, and research. In addition, the Director will respond to requests to participate in other existing programs to build partnerships within and external to the College. Finally, the Director will participate in needs assessment analysis and design and offer new programs responsive to the identified needs of the area. The Director will assist in the identification and design of assessment instruments, the collection and organization of data and data presentation. Every program offered through the Center will be evaluated using valid and reliable measures. The Director also will participate in public events as needed.
Contingent upon availability of funding.
(1) Masters degree in 1) Education with an emphasis in one of the STEM-related disciplines, 2) a STEM Discipline, OR 3) a Related Field; from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by ECU.License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :
(2) Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and/or leadership in P-20 schools in one of the STEM disciplines; and
(3) Familiarity with P-20 school administration.
(4) Proven ability to work collaboratively within an organization.(5) Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
