Position description

The Department of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley seeks an Postdoctoral Employee to work with Professor Joshua Bloom in the area of machine learning applied to astronomy data. Bloom's group works in the interface between machine learning and astrophysics. The Berkeley astronomy department maintains a broad portfolio of research endeavors from the solar system to cosmology. Recent hires include those working in the context of gravitational wave/multi-messenger astronomy and the transient universe. This position is funded by the National Science Foundation (#2206744; “CDS&E: Accelerating Astrophysical Insight at Scale with Likelihood-Free Inference”).

The successful candidate will be conducting research that involves the assembly of datasets, building and training of simulation-based inference models, and the testing of those models against out-of-training samples. Applications to ZTF, LS4, and LSST/Rubin data will be pursued, as well as with other datasets. Publications of the results will be one of the final outputs as well as open-source code implications. The candidate will work directly with Prof. Bloom, his students, postdoctoral scholars, and other collaborators.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
PhD or equivalent international degree.

Preferred qualifications
  • PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, or related field
  • Extensive experience building and training models with pytorch
  • Previous experience publishing machine learning results in conferences and or journals
  • Familiarity with cutting edge ML techniques
  • Experience working with 2-d and sequential data for machine learning.
  • Prior experience building and testing simulation-based inference models.
  • Interest in and demonstrated experience with training graduate and undergraduate students
