We are seeking an Assistant Director of Postdoctoral Career Design who will be part of the JHMI Professional Development and Career Office (PDCO). The mission of the PDCO is to provide doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows with the professional skills and knowledge to pursue and succeed in their chosen careers. The PDCO offers professional development and career services to doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows primarily in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (SOM), the Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH), and the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (SON), and in partnership with the JHU PHutures Office, the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS), Whiting School of Engineering (WSE), and other schools across JHU. Together, we serve over 3,000 doctoral students and 1,600 postdoctoral fellows university wide.

This position will work alongside the Director of the PDCO to address broad, organizational goals and objectives relevant to academic careers and professional development, with an emphasis on maintaining and developing new programming to support university-wide postdoctoral fellows’ needs. This position will report to the Director of the PDCO with a dotted line to the Executive Director of Doctoral and Postdoctoral Career Design of PHutures. PHutures, a department within Johns Hopkins University's Integrative Learning and Life Design (ILLD) division, is dedicated to enhancing professional development, life design, alumni connections, employer engagement, and career and mentoring opportunities for all doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. The Assistant Director will work independently on multiple projects and set their own deadlines and priorities in relation to PDCO and PHutures programming needs, with an emphasis on supporting postdoctoral fellows across the university.

In addition, this role will collaborate with the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA), the Johns Hopkins Postdoctoral Association (JHPDA), Homewood Postdoctoral Association (HW-PDA), Vice Provost of Graduate Education and Professional Education, university-wide Deans offices, career services throughout the university, ILLD, various offices within BSPH and SON, and other relevant divisions and offices within the university, as required, to provide support and contribute to PDCO and PHutures programming.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Career Education & Professional Development Programming

  • Coordinate with the PDCO Director and Executive Director of Career and Postdoctoral Design to plan and execute courses, workshops, programs, content, and digital resources to help postdoctoral fellows pursue academic careers.
  • Develop and enhance a diverse range of career exploration and education programs, resources, and opportunities specifically designed for postdoctoral fellows exploring and/or pursuing non-academic career paths.
  • Evaluate career services activities for impact, reach, scalability and outcomes and make recommendations to staff and leadership on strategic direction and alignment with national best practices and continuous innovation.
  • Assist with initiatives for the ‘Finding a Post-doc Week’ and the annual postdoctoral conference hosted by the JHPDA and HW-PDA
  • Coordinate with JHU postdoctoral fellow associations engaging in career and professional development activities to promote collaboration and limit programming redundancy.
  • Cultivate and strengthen partnerships with colleagues across units, including, but not limited to; academic and clinical departments, OPA, the Life Design Lab, alumni relations, international services, evaluation and assessment, and the Teaching Academy.
  • Maintain website content and resources aligned with academic careers and professional development for postdoctoral fellows and doctoral students.
  • Ensure all programming supports and provides new resources for JHU’s international postdoctoral fellows and communities.

Research & Other Communication Programming

  • Create new and maintain current year-round flagship grant writing programs and/or workshops that support postdoctoral fellows applying to various grant opportunities (government, foundation, etc.) and across various disciplines. A key emphasis will be highlighting opportunities for international fellows.
  • Draw inspiration from the successful Empower Your Pitch contest and design a comprehensive program focused on fostering inclusive communication skills for Postdocs, enabling them to effectively convey their ideas and engage with diverse audiences.
  • Develop new workshops and materials to support communication skill-building across a variety of mediums.
  • Manage contracts and logistics with grant writing experts that provide services for doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows university wide.
  • Develop a cadre of faculty to review grants and participate in communication workshops across a variety of disciplines.

Postdoctoral Career Coaching

  • Provide 1:1 and group career coaching and consultation for postdoctoral fellows across the university.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in education, counseling, education administration or STEM-related discipline required.
  • Five years related experience required, including some experience in higher education.
  • Experience serving diverse populations of students with career-development programming.
  • Demonstrated understanding of nationally recognized practices, trends, and procedures for career and life design.
  • Demonstrated success developing institutionally effective partnerships.
  • Grant-writing experience, with an understanding of the application process for government grants (e.g. NIH, NSF, local arts), foundation grants, and experience communicating across different mediums.
  • Experience teaching or leading workshops for adult learners.
  • Experience providing or facilitating professional and career development services, preferably to graduate and postgraduate trainees.
  • Event and program management experience.
  • Experience using websites and social media.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD preferred.
  • Experience working with international trainees, those from communities under-represented in STEM, and people with disabilities.
  • Experience working with postdoctoral fellows and familiarity with the unique needs of this population.
