Organizational Unit Overview:

The College of Education is located at East Carolina University. The department of Literacy Studies, English Education, and History Education is one of six departments within the College of Education. The Reading Education program offers both undergraduate and graduate programs, including a Master of Arts in Education in Literacy Education as well as undergraduate methods courses and reading concentration coursework for undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science K-6 licensure program and the Bachelor of Science K-12 Special Education program. The department also provides courses for candidates obtaining a residency license in North Carolina. Faculty in the department engage in regular collaboration and leadership with the shared goal of producing quality teachers.

Job Duties :

The department of Literacy Studies, English Education, and History Education in the College of Education at East Carolina University (ECU) is seeking applicants for a tenure/tenure-track, nine-month, full-time, elementary reading/literacy faculty position. The position begins August 2024.
Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications.

Responsibilities include teaching a variety of undergraduate and/or graduate reading/literacy courses in face-to-face, online, and/or hybrid formats; teaching residency courses; supervising practicum and/or internship experiences; building connections with local schools; and collaborating within the department and across the college to strengthen course and program alignment; engaging in scholarly research and grant writing; presenting at conferences; and collaborating with colleagues to strengthen research-to-practice within the program; and engaging in appropriate professional service to the department, college, university, local schools, and greater research community are also expected.

This position is part of a college-wide cohort of searches for the College of Education at East Carolina University (ECU), designed to connect, support, and empower incoming faculty along research interests that support the university’s mission and vision priorities.

ECU’s College of Education trains and prepares educators to work in all environments (i.e., urban, suburban, and rural) however, many of our graduates work in rural communities in eastern North Carolina. As such, these positions are focused primarily on those interested in educating, working with, and supporting those in rural environments as well as conducting research on issues pertaining to rural education.

Minimum Education/Experience :

Ph.D. or Ed.D. in education, curriculum & instruction, literacy education, or special education with an expertise in literacy from an appropriately accredited institution; knowledge of evidence-based reading/literacy instruction, assessment, and intervention and culturally-relevant pedagogies; demonstrated record of or strong potential for literacy-related research and scholarship consistent with rank. ABD candidates will be initially appointed with the probationary term rank of Assistant Professor and must have the terminal degree conferred prior to your first reappointment. Qualifying degrees must be conferred and received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :

Current or eligibility for NC Teaching License.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

Preference given to candidates with experience in teaching literacy in a K-12 school setting and experience in higher education for face-to-face and/or online literacy courses.
