The Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education at Case Western Reserve University is inviting applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in trauma and violence prevention. This position will be mentored by the faculty and senior research staff at the Begun Center, with primary mentors to be identified consistent with the interests of the identified candidate. Daniel J. Flannery, PhD, Director, will have ultimate responsibility for supervision of the fellow.

The fellowship will be a full-time, hybrid position focused on participating in research, evaluation, training, and dissemination activities:

1) Cutting edge research and evaluation on violence exposure, trauma and substance abuse

2) Multi-disciplinary initiatives that link knowledge about risk and protective factors with evidence-based treatment approaches, particularly emerging strategies to address violence and trauma

3) Development and dissemination of screening instruments for child and adolescent exposure to violence and trauma that permits early identification of the need for trauma-informed care

4) Research and evaluation that directly impacts the development of local, state, and federal policy

5) Curriculum development and training of front line workers (e.g. police officers, social workers) to recognize trauma in the citizens they serve and their fellow workers

6) Management and analysis of existing data sets of the Begun Center to address important social problems in the areas of trauma, law enforcement, community-based violence prevention, juvenile justice, behavioral health, and more

7) Development or research and information gathering protocols in emerging problem areas including the heroin-opiate crisis, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other issues identified by community partners and federal agencies as priority needs

8) Increasing the dissemination of the Center’s research and collaborative initiatives in high-quality peer-reviewed scientific outlets

9) Dissemination of project findings to community partners and agencies via briefs, white papers, and reports

10) Preparation of local, state, and federal grant proposals.

In addition, fellows will have the opportunity to guest lecture in courses taught by Begun Center faculty on topics related to violence prevention including but not limited to:

1) Violence as a public health problem

2) Evidence-based treatment approaches including trauma-informed care

3) Substance use and related disorders

Fellows will actively participate in dissemination on center research and evaluation findings including the production of project reports, data briefs, policy statements, training protocols, and webinars. As appropriate and consistent with university policy and the fellow’s interests and training needs, they may also be eligible to take advanced doctoral level courses in epidemiology and biostatistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, psychology, etc.


Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in social work, psychology, sociology, public health, or related fields at the time of their appointment.

Applicants should have experience working with qualitative and/or quantitative data management and analysis.

The anticipated appointment starting date will be for Fall 2024 or sooner, with funding guaranteed for a term of one year with opportunity for renewal of the position for an additional year. Finalists may be asked to travel to CWRU for in-person interviews. Travel may be partially or fully subsidized.


The salary and benefits for this position are consistent with National Institute of Health-funded post-doctoral fellowships, and includes membership(s) in relevant professional societies and applicable license fees, travel and attendance to one to two professional conferences for dissemination of project findings, and attendance at professional development workshops as appropriate.

About the Begun Center:

For over two decades Begun Center faculty and staff have been conducting research, evaluation, and training in violence prevention with a particular focus on violence exposure, trauma, mental health, substance abuse, and behavioral health related to violence. The Begun Center has grown to include more than 60 faculty, research staff, and students representing multiple disciplinary approaches and perspectives including but not limited to social work, public health, psychology, sociology, law, anthropology, and education. Much of the Center’s current work involves large multi-system collaborative efforts on such important current problems as police use of force and misconduct, juvenile justice, education, offender reentry, sexual assault, the heroin-opiate crisis, and providing evidence-based treatment to youth and families to address trauma and other complex behavior problems. As the work and influence of the Begun Center continues to expand, it is uniquely positioned in its efforts to train professionals in how to conduct research, evaluation, and treatment to reduce violence and the impact of that work on policy and practice. The work of the Center is guided by a National Advisory Board of experts and national leaders in the fields of violence prevention, behavioral health, justice, and clinical best practices.
