The Florida State University Department of Physics invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in the research area of Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, with an anticipated start date in August 2024.

Qualified candidates with research interests and expertise in all areas of experimental condensed matter and materials physics are encouraged to apply. Competitive applications should demonstrate the potential for establishing a vigorous externally funded research program. A strong commitment to both graduate and undergraduate education in physics is also expected.

Condensed matter physics at FSU offers a highly collaborative environment, with substantial connections to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL,, the FSU Quantum Initiative (, materials chemistry, and the College of Engineering, as well as excellent programs in nuclear physics, particle physics, and astrophysics within the department ( The experimental condensed matter science programs within physics and at the NHMFL cover a broad range of research activities that span the discipline, augmented by a strong condensed matter theory group.


The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree in physics (or equivalent), and postdoctoral research experience is expected.

A demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, while establishing a well-recognized research program, is essential.

The FSU Physics Department offers research programs that are well-funded, academically diverse, and provide a breadth of learning and teaching experience to over 300 graduate and undergraduate students. The department is comprised of over 60 faculty members specializing in condensed matter, nuclear, high-energy, atomic, bio-, and astrophysics.

The Physics Department houses unique experimental facilities such as the John D. Fox Nuclear Accelerator Laboratory, where this position is located.
