Job Details

The Engineering & Mathematics (E&M) Division of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) invites applications for a tenure track position in Mathematics at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will join our faculty on a full-time basis for a nine-month academic year appointment beginning September 16, 2024. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research/scholarship and service.

The base salary range for this position will be $11,285- $11,507 per month during the nine-month academic year ($101,565-$103,563 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.  

Candidates will be considered across a wide range of research and teaching interests in mathematics and statistics. Current curricular needs are greatest in areas of theoretical mathematics, such as abstract algebra, topology, and analysis. A potential area of curricular and programmatic growth is in statistics and data analysis. The Mathematics program offers a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, a minor in Mathematics, and, jointly with the School of Business, a minor in Actuarial Science.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the success of the program in several ways, including developing and teaching impactful courses that support our students' educational and vocational aspirations, engaging in research that involves undergraduate students, and through service to the program, division, and school.

The Mathematics program prides itself on its success in engaging undergraduate students in research. We currently host an NSF-funded REU site in mathematics, and our faculty are also involved in hosting a Sloan Foundation REU site, in collaboration with Heritage University, a program that offers Native American students accessible summer research projects. Outside of funded sites, the faculty are encouraged to engage students in independent research and study projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a diverse range of undergraduate mathematics courses, such as the calculus sequence, linear algebra, differential equations, analysis, abstract algebra, numerical analysis, probability and statistics, and other mathematics courses. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active research agenda, resulting in scholarly publications published in reputable journals and conferences; pursuit of external funding to support research endeavors will also be strongly encouraged, and engagement of undergraduate students in research is expected. The successful candidate will be strongly encouraged to pursue opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, both in teaching and research, with a particular focus on opportunities that benefit undergraduate students, with an expectation of active engagement in service activities across the campus and the university, including involvement in committees, initiatives, and projects that contribute to the overall development and mission of the school and the institution. The candidate will be expected to be committed to supporting students from diverse backgrounds, actively enhancing their learning experience, and creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

The Mathematics program is part of the Division of Engineering & Mathematics, which is housed in the School of STEM. In addition to Mathematics, the division has programs in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Engineering. The faculty of the Mathematics program is comprised of 15 full-time faculty members, 8 of whom are on the tenure track and 7 of whom are on the teaching track. The faculty have expertise in a broad range of areas, including applied mathematics, discrete geometry, geometry of polynomials, inverse problems, knot theory, mathematical modeling, mathematics education, medical imaging, nonnegative matrix theory, numerical optimization, technology use in K-16, and tiling theory.

UW Bothell offers over 60 undergraduate and graduate degrees, enhanced with a wide variety of minors and certification programs to help students build on their major(s) and/or expand their course of study into new academic disciplines.

Current enrollment is approximately 5,800 students, with over 95% of undergraduates from Washington State. Just over 40% are first-generation college attendees, and more than half are students of color.

  • Ph.D. in mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics, or foreign equivalent, by the date of hire. 
  • Experience in teaching must include having taught at least one course as the primary instructor.
