Position and Qualifications

The Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science is anchored by an actively engaged faculty and supports students interested in obtaining degrees in mathematics (B.A., B.S., or minor) with optional minors/concentrations in data science. Beyond the core curriculum, special topics courses are offered in a variety of subfields of statistics, mathematics, computer science, and data science. In addition, faculty work closely with students to explore and develop research projects culminating in a capstone experience.

A broadly trained individual with expertise in mathematics and statistics is sought (experience with data science and the programming language R is preferred but not required). The applicant should possess a strong interest in teaching excellence and innovation within a liberal arts institution focused on educating women. Applicants with a Ph.D. (or who are ABD and complete it by June 30, 2025) in areas focused on statistics, applied mathematics, or mathematics are invited to apply.

The position carries a teaching load equivalent to six courses per year. The successful candidate must be able to teach 100- and 200-level courses in statistics and upper-level courses in statistics and mathematics. They will have the opportunity to develop special topics courses and will contribute courses to the core curriculum (Hollins’ general education program). Additional duties include maintaining an active research agenda and service to the department and university such as student mentorship and advising, supervision of undergraduate capstones and internships, and faculty governance.

Candidates are desired who will advance Hollins’ commitment to belonging, pluralism, and student success; who have demonstrated success working with and mentoring students who are first-generation and limited-income; and who have an active record of ongoing scholarly activity in the form of publications and presentations.
