Assistant Professor, Department of Art and Design, Art History

The Department of Art and Design of Jacksonville State University’s College of Arts, Humanities and Sciences is seeking to hire a scholar for an Assistant Professor in Art History.

Jacksonville State University's Department of Art & Design invites applications for a tenure-track position in Art History beginning in October 2023. The teaching expectation is four courses per semester (4/4 teaching load). Courses to be taught by the candidate include one of the two Surveys of Art (ART 111, ART 112), Art Appreciation to serve the university's core curriculum, as well as advanced courses in the candidate's field of specialization and secondary fields. The candidate will have the opportunity to teach classes at both undergraduate and graduate levels. There is ample opportunity and enthusiasm for the candidate to develop their own course content and to contribute to the ongoing development of the Art History curriculum, including cultivating the Art History concentration. Successful candidates will work to facilitate student comprehension and application of concepts, skills, and behaviors that contribute to the development of their student's artistic and design sensibilities, maturity, and ability to be responsible members of society. We welcome candidates who demonstrate excellence in reflective multicultural and inclusive teaching practices and who display a strong commitment to collaboration and interdisciplinary work.

Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Art History or Interdisciplinary related fields or ABD in Art History with a degree completion date by the date on which the contract begins, August 2024.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience at the college/university level preferred.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness in Art History involving innovative teaching practices aimed at engaging students.
  • Experience or interest in teaching Graphic Design History at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Evidence of consistent involvement in research in the field of Art History.
  • Evidence of ability to collaborate in departmental service and leadership positions.

The Department: JSU’s Department of Art and Design offers a comprehensive professional education in the study and practice of visual art and design. The Department has 11 full-time faculty members and offers NASAD accredited programs. At the undergraduate level, the department offers a BFA degree option with concentrations in; Ceramics, Illustration, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography, and Printmaking, as well as BA in Art History or Studio Art degree. At the graduate level, the department offers an MFA in Visual Communication Design. Preparing our students for a professional career in the arts is of primary importance and we do so by focusing on professional practice, portfolio building, and real-world experiences.
