Description Position Overview

Entry level position for a mechanically inclined individual. Applies themselves to learn basic plumbing skills. Studies, learns the methodology of various plumbing systems, and discusses learning material. Communicates effectively. Assists other plumbing team members in various plumbing services related to our mission.

Department Job Functions

Unclog sewer systems or fixtures. Replaces domestic water filters. Changes fixture batteries and inspect buildings. Maintains water features by cleaning them and replenishing chemicals. Repairs or replaces plumbing systems, domestic water piping, sewer piping, roof piping, and storm drains. Detects gas leaks and repairs or replaces piping.

Installs, upgrades, or replaces various plumbing fixtures such as water heaters, eye or shower safety equipment, sump pumps, circulation pumps, pool pumps, and French drains. Performs line locates and analyzes blueprints. Occasional welding using various welding tools. Some large equipment is used such as a jet sewer machine, backhoe, trencher, and boat.

Available to help with a facilities emergency. This may necessitate at times call outs. Further, a pre-arranged shift change may be implemented for predictable emergencies like inclement weather. Performs duties and complies with needs of special events, before, during, and after the special events are completed. Observes communicates, complies with and enforces Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) provisions analyzes supplies and materials used in the performance, training, and duties of the trade.

Performs other related duties as necessary to support the UCO mission.

Qualifications

Requires general education or vocational training or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Must pass pre-employment screening. A valid driver's license is required to carry out the position's duties and responsibilities.

Qualifications Preferred

Mechanically inclined work experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Ability to safely operate tools of the trade. Sufficient dexterity and coordination to operate equipment common to the trade. Reads and understands manuals and instructions printed in English. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing. Knowledgeable in sound human relations practices in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with outside vendors, within the Physical Plant, and among the UCO Community.

This position requires a physical. The physical requirements are:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. regularly and 75 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and carry 200 feet.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and carry up/down 30 stairs.
  • Ability to walk regularly for long periods of time across the campus.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to use and reach with hands and arms regularly.
  • Ability to climb in high places using a ladder or balance frequently.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend and crawl occasionally.
  • Ability to push or pull dolly loaded with up to 120 pounds for 300 feet occasionally.
  • Must have close, distance, and peripheral vision.
  • Depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Pass PFT (pulmonary function test)
