The Technical Director reports to the Managing Director and serves as the primary technical and facility supervisor of the Fine and Performing Arts Center (FPAC). The Technical Director will schedule, supervise, and coordinate the daily use of the Dorothy Menker Theater, John and Angeline Oremus Theater, and the Recital Hall in the FPAC. This position manages and supervises all activities in the technical support spaces including the scene shop, costume shop, light booths, sound booths, dressing rooms, and storage spaces; organize and maintain the scene shop and all technical equipment; supervise load-in/out of events, hang and focus of all lighting equipment and the configuration of sound equipment for all academic music, academic theater, and touring productions; arrange for rental of additional equipment as needed; provide adequate technical staff for all programs held in the performance spaces of the FPAC; develop and maintain safety standards for all student, staff, professional artists, designers, and technicians using the performance spaces and/or shops; and facilitate all technical spaces, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), safety checks on a regular basis.

The Fine and Performing Arts Center (FPAC) at Moraine Valley Community College, is located in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. The center presents world-class, award-winning artists and prides itself as a showcase for performing and visual arts, a center for academic preparation, and a resource for all who love the arts.
The Technical Director is dedicated to the learning college concepts by developing programs and facilitating activities that promote student success and lifelong learning. The Technical Director, in addition to hybrid work assignments if applicable, is required to be present on-campus as needed (e.g., in-service, professional development, departmental meetings) and flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as needed.

Essential duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversee the operational aspects of the performance spaces for all FPAC events and rehearsals for the Dorothy Menker Theater, John and Angeline Oremus Theater, Recital Hall, FPAC Atrium, and all technical support spaces including scene shop, costume shop, light booths, sound booths, dressing rooms, storage spaces, etc. Develop and maintain technical drawings for all performance spaces.
  • Oversee FPAC on-call and independent contractor positions. Hire, train, manage, schedule, coordinate assignments, and manage payroll for 15+ technical crew members including Moraine Valley students.
  • Supervise load-in, load-out (strike), hang and focus, sound check, and technical rehearsal for all programs in the FPAC spaces.
  • Coordinate all technical advancements and logistical details for the Performing Arts Series, Academic Theater and Music events, and internal/external rentals.
  • Supervise the safe operating procedures of shop-related activities. Manage the shop schedule and supervise guest designers for Academic Theater productions.
  • Assist Academic Music on set-up and strike for rehearsals and concerts.
  • Develop, supervise, and maintain technical contracts, policies, and procedures for all technical support spaces for safety procedures and protocols.
  • Develop and maintain all materials and equipment inventories in technical shop and venues. Supervise and schedule maintenance repairs of facilities and equipment. Supervise and maintain tools and equipment for technical shop and venues. facilitate all technical spaces, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), safety checks on a regular basis
  • Coordinate with the Managing Director on annual budgets pertaining to technical labor, maintenance contracts for equipment, routine maintenance, replacement of equipment, supplies for performance space and shops, equipment rental, etc.
  • Prepare and maintain monthly budget reports and submit to Managing Director.
  • Oversee Assistant Technical Director with sound and lighting design for the Performing Arts Series, internal/external rentals, and Academic Theater and Music events


Bachelor’s degree in related area required, Master’s degree preferred.

Minimum of 3+ years’ of experience as technical director in a performing arts facility.

Experience in following areas needed: working in an academic setting, supervising multiple performing arts spaces, training and supervising crew; developing and maintaining budgets; maintaining technical theater equipment; scheduling spaces/resources; implementing and maintaining safety standards.
Must have a current CPR/AED and First Aid certification or be willing to go through the necessary training to acquire and maintain certification.


The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Possess a background in technical performing arts as evidenced by course work and/or related experience.
  • Three (3) or more years’ experience in A/V, lighting, sound, high-level production equipment, audio/video devices (projectors, amps, speakers, scalers, standards, protocols, wiring, etc.), live streaming, and technical and facility management. Experience in equipment maintenance and repairs is required. 2+ years knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Vector works is required.
  • Knowledge and expertise in venue and entertainment safety procedures, and the ability to identify and correct potential hazards. Knowledge of safe rigging practices is a plus. Knowledge of how to properly use fall arrest harnesses and equipment.
  • Possess excellent supervisory, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Possess written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and capacity to work independently on concurrent projects with frequent interruptions required. Ability to assign priorities and complete work on time.
  • Knowledge of professional touring contracts and show riders.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize a complex workload, collaborate effectively and flexibly with MVCC faculty/staff/students, community members, touring guest artists, and other professionals representing a wide diversity of personalities and cultures.
  • Must have ability to lift, move, pull, or push pieces of technical equipment that weigh up to 75 lbs.
    Three (3) or more years’ experience in hiring, training, and mentoring technical crew staff, including college students, and experience in overseeing independent contracts and vendors.

General hours: 8:00 a.m.-5:15 p.m. Hours may vary due to programming and events. Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours required.

Minimum Starting Rate:

$59,770 (Plus benefits)
