Job Summary:
The External Communications Specialist will enhance the reputation and visibility of the CU Cancer Center by developing and implementing strategic external communication initiatives by crafting compelling external messaging, coordinating media relations efforts, and fostering critical relationships with key external stakeholders. The External Communications Specialist will contribute to efforts that increase awareness of the CU Cancer Center's achievements, research breakthroughs, and community impact.
The position requires attention to detail, project management experience, and the ability to work with all levels of staff and faculty with direction from the leadership of the shared-services communications team.
This CU School of Medicine shared-services communications team supports the Dean's Office by connecting and strengthening the communications between the school and its departments, divisions, and centers.

Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute external communication strategies:
- Develop a comprehensive external communication plan aligned with the CU Cancer Center's strategic priorities, including research, education, and diversity equity and inclusion.
- Implement strategies to engage external audiences, including academic institutions, oncology specific organizations, community organizations, donors, and media.
Media relations and press outreach:
- Support media relations efforts, assist with local media inquiries, coordinate interviews, and provide accurate and timely information.
- Attend cancer-specific conferences and promote research presented at conferences with media and external audiences.
- Attend and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts including meetings, visits, and outreach.
- Identify opportunities for the CU Cancer Center's leadership, faculty, and experts to participate in external speaking engagements, conferences, and media interviews.
- Track national cancer awards and help coordinate the nomination of CU Cancer Center leadership.
- Assist in preparing talking points, presentations, and briefing materials for external speaking engagements and media appearances.
- Track media placements.
Content creation and management:
- Produce compelling articles and blog posts aimed at external partners and leverage Doximity to highlight the CU Cancer Center's achievements, research breakthroughs, and leadership positions in national cancer organizations.
- Create external newsletters to highlight the CU Cancer Center and promote presenters at oncology conferences.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to develop accurate and engaging content for external communication channels.
- Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all external communication materials.
- Assist with the C3, the CU Cancer Center's biannual magazine, to expand its reach.
Digital and social media management:
- Assist with the CU Cancer Center's digital presence, including social media channels, working with the Social Media and Website Program Manager on social media strategies that engage external audiences and promote the CU Cancer Center's activities and events.
- Develop social media content, including posts, reels, and stories to be shared across CU Cancer Center social media channels from conferences and community events.
- Partner with the web services team to provide creative direction on the CU Cancer Center website.
- Regularly updating existing content, generating new content, and cross-linking across CU sites and other related sites.
Collaboration and best practices:
- Build and maintain relationships with CU Cancer Center members and staff and CU School of Medicine shared-services communications team.
- Collaborate with Anschutz Medical Campus, CSU Flint Animal Cancer Center, UCHealth, Children's Hospital Colorado, Veterans Affairs, and others as appropriate.
- Identify and implement best practices regarding external communication practices, strategies, and tools.

- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in communications, marketing, public or media relations, journalism, or other related fields.
- At least one (1) year of experience working in communications, journalism, or marketing field(s), handling project management, prioritization, timelines, and ensuring on-time deliverables.

Senior Professional:

- Understanding of content marketing principles and how to create engaging social media content, of major social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.
- Awareness of current and emerging social media trends, features, and best practices.
- Data analysis skills to measure the impact of communication efforts and identify areas for improvement.
- Exceptional independent writing skills and experience in developing clear, concise, and key message-focused communications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt communication style to resonate with the target audiences.
- Excellent knowledge of editing and grammar, including AP style.
