The Department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Vermont (UVM) invites applications for two tenure-track hires in Biomedical Engineering. Applicants will be considered at both the Assistant and Associate Professor rank. Qualified Associate Professors may be considered for the Karl and Mary Fessenden Professorship in Biomedical Engineering.
Candidates are expected to hold baccalaureate and doctorate degrees in Biomedical Engineering or a related field. Qualified candidates in all areas are encouraged to apply. The department seeks to grow in multiple research areas including human motion capture, wearable biosensing, biotransport, biomaterials, tissue engineering, bioimaging, and/or digital health.
These hires will support bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs in Biomedical Engineering. The anticipated start date is Fall 2024. Successful candidates will be joining UVM following a period of unprecedented growth that has led to the successful completion of world-class STEM facilities, the development of an ABET accredited BS degree, the expansion of MS and PhD degrees in BME, and the creation of the entrepreneurship-focused Center for Biomedical Innovation. Biomedical Engineering is among the fastest growing and largest undergraduate majors at UVM. The Biomedical Engineering Program at UVM leverages strong curricular and research ties with the University’s Larner College of Medicine and the University of Vermont Medical Center (a regional referral center providing advanced care for more than 1 million patients), which are all located in very close proximity on the same campus. The BME Program values interdisciplinary research and
innovative approaches to engineering education, as illustrated by a new undergraduate curriculum focused on design thinking and active learning. The BME major enjoys high student enrollment and a strong culture of undergraduate research. External research funding has expanded rapidly in recent years, fueled by shared resources like the Vermont Advanced Computing Core and strong connections with the Larner College of Medicine.
Successful candidates will be expected to develop a thriving and externally funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in BME, and advise and mentor students at all levels. All qualified applicants will be considered, but we are particularly interested in those who work in areas that complement existing research strengths of the BME Program and the Larner College of Medicine. The scientific and academic environments in the Department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering, the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, and throughout the UVM community are dynamic, highly collaborative, and multi-disciplinary.
Reflecting our innovative and collaborative spirit, our faculty actively collaborate in their teaching and research with faculty in other UVM Colleges and Schools plus the UVM Medical Center that shares our campus. The potential for collaboration should be made clear in the application materials.
The University of Vermont, established in 1791, is a comprehensive research university with a current enrollment of 12,000+ undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. The University is located in Burlington, Vermont, and enjoys a panoramic setting on the shores of Lake Champlain, between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Widely known for its music and food scene as well as its outdoor and adventure lifestyle (Outside Magazine and National Geographic), Burlington has also been hailed as a top technology hub (Forbes) and a city of the future (Business Insider). Furthermore, Burlington’s vibrant entrepreneurial and high-technology ecosystem has been recognized by the National Science Foundation’s US Ignite program, the national TechHire City network, and the Kauffman Foundation. While located in the idyllic rural state of Vermont, our frontier paradise is only about a two-hour drive to Montreal and a three-hour drive to Boston. In addition, Burlington International Airport offers direct flights to numerous North American destinations.
UVM is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching, service and research, scholarship, or creative arts. We are an educationally purposeful community seeking to prepare students to be accountable leaders in a diverse and changing world. Members of the UVM community embrace and advance the values of Our Common Ground: Openness, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Innovation, and Justice. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to the ideals of accessibility, inclusiveness, and academic excellence as reflected in the tenets of Our Common Ground. To that end, candidates must provide a diversity impact statement as part of the application detailing how they will further the diversity of the unit through their teaching and service at the University.
UVM is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other category legally protected by federal or state law.
Applications must be submitted online at www.uvmjobs.com (position #TBD). Applicants should provide 1) a cover letter that highlights their relevant experience, 2) a 2-3 page statement describing their research accomplishments and plans including how their work complements existing research strengths in the BME program and/or the Larner College of Medicine, 3) a 1 page statement describing their teaching philosophy, 4) a statement on how the candidate would further the diversity of the unit, 5) a current CV, and 6) the names and contact information for three references (these will be entered and managed by the application system).
Applications without each of these components will not be considered. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and applicants are encouraged to submit their applications by December 15, 2023. A background check will be conducted on each final candidate and salary will be made at a level appropriate to the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. The University of Vermont’s hilltop campus looks out across one of America’s most vibrant small cities to Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains beyond. Here, students’ educational experience and activities are enriched by our location — from the energy and innovation of Burlington to the forests, farms, and independent spirit of Vermont.

UVM is a Public Ivy and top 100 research university of a perfect size, large enough to offer a breadth of ideas, resources, and opportunities, yet small enough to enable close faculty-student mentorship. With a commitment to undergraduate education, UVM professors — world-class researchers, scholars, and artists — bring their discoveries into the classroom and their students into the field.

You’ll find UVM faculty and students studying the effects of climate change aboard the Melosira, a research vessel and floating lab; testing new vaccines at the on-campus medical center; launching local start-ups; and working with refugees at Burlington community centers.
