The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the areas of Introductory and Physical Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024, or shortly thereafter. Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Chemistry by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths (see: https://www.chemistry.utoronto.ca

Applicant expertise and teaching-related scholarly interests may include, but are not limited to, Physical Chemistry or Chemical Physics. Experience with scientific computing in the context of chemistry would be an asset. The successful candidate will join a dynamic community engaged in chemistry pedagogic scholarship within a research-intensive university environment. Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree granting program at the undergraduate level. This experience may include laboratory preparation/delivery, curriculum development, mentorship of undergraduate students, and participatory experience in outreach activities. A demonstrated keen interest in developing novel approaches to engaging undergraduates of all academic backgrounds is required. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and inquiry and demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.
The successful candidate will be required to deliver lectures and associated laboratories in physical chemistry/general chemistry and other introductory and upper-year undergraduate courses, depending on curricular needs and their area of specialization. In addition, the candidate should be capable of teaching mathematical concepts to chemistry undergraduates. They are also expected to supervise undergraduate research projects and develop new teaching laboratory experiments along with graduate student teaching fellows. A knowledge of health and safety considerations relevant to chemists working and learning in the laboratory is essential. The candidate will additionally engage in pedagogical advancement and curriculum development, and will lead positive change in our educational programs that represent the evolving needs for chemistry, science, and technology in society in Canada and around the world. It is expected that such creative educational development activities will be communicated to the broader teaching community (nationally and internationally) through conference presentations and publications.
