Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development invites applications for a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor in Literacy Education within the Department of Language and Literacy Education.

We seek a colleague with expertise in early literacy development, reading foundations, and supporting students experiencing reading difficulties. The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of scientifically-based research related to reading and writing development and instruction, including supporting students with disabilities and multilingual students, as well as knowledge of critical theories and a demonstrated commitment to culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies and practices.

The Language and Literacy Education Department is a community of scholars and educators with a strong social justice orientation who embrace multilingualism and multiliteracies and who share a commitment to combating deficit framings of students from racially and linguistically marginalized communities. We seek a colleague who shares this orientation and who will contribute to our efforts to build equitable and just education environments in partnership with students, educators, families, and communities, including within the Boston Public Schools and surrounding school districts.


  • Teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in the literacy education program and other programs (e.g., early and elementary education, special education, and/or multilingual education)
  • Serve as program director of literacy education, including advising master’s students and coordinating their practicum placements, supervision, and coaching
  • Contribute to the operations, development, and management of BU Wheelock’s Donald D. Durrell Reading and Writing Clinic, which serves as a practicum site for graduate students seeking licensure as Specialist Teachers of Reading (Grades 1-12)
  • Contribute to ongoing cross-departmental efforts to prepare teachers across programs to teach reading using research-based approaches
  • Build and sustain collaborative relationships with local schools, school districts, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and local and national literacy professional organizations
  • Maintain an active program of research in early literacy development, reading foundations, and/or the teaching of reading
  • Provide service to the university and the profession

Required Skills

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in reading/literacy or a closely related field
  • K-12 teaching experience in the United States

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensed as a Specialist Teacher of Reading
  • Experience teaching university-level reading/literacy courses
  • Experience directing a teacher education program or lab/clinic
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency
