General Description / Primary Purpose:

The University of North Florida’s Department of Art and Design invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Painting and Drawing beginning in Fall 2024

The University of North Florida’s Department of Art and Design is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The Department is comprised of six major areas of undergraduate study: Art History, Ceramics, Graphic Design and Digital Media, Painting/Drawing/Printmaking, Photography, and Sculpture. The Department expands learning opportunities for students and provides professional enrichment for faculty and staff through a partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Jacksonville, a cultural institute of UNF. In addition, the Department maintains an extensive permanent teaching collection of approximately 500 works from world-renowned artists.

Our program is seeking an innovative artist and educator with robust professional practice, experience teaching, an understanding of history and knowledge of contemporary artistic production as it pertains to painting and drawing. Our ideal candidate should be experienced in operating a painting studio and demonstrating a working knowledge of the education studio environment. Responsibilities will include teaching three undergraduate painting, drawing or foundation courses, within a wide range of mediums. The successful candidate will incorporate both traditional and emerging painting and drawing practices into their teaching.

In addition to teaching, the candidate must show ongoing excellence in research, scholarship and/or creative activity. This may include submissions to conferences, gallery shows, publications, grants or fellowships in national, regional or local venues. In addition, service to the department, college and university is expected.

Job Function:

Teaching: Course load is a 3/3 with an opportunity to teach in the summer sessions.
Research/Scholarship: Faculty is required to develop a research and scholarly agenda which is outlined in the departmental guidelines.
Service: Faculty is required to serve on university committees, local, national, international boards, professional organizations and/or other service to the community.

Faculty Position Required Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have an M.F.A. degree and at least three years of teaching experience beyond the graduate T.A. level.

Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in traditional approaches to painting techniques, have experience teaching painting foundations, limited understanding of the figure, aspects of glazing, knowledge of paint mediums, and have a basic working knowledge of alternative types of paint such as gauche, encaustic, and tempera.
