General Description / Primary Purpose:

Under the supervision of the Head of Access Services, this position supports the Interlibrary Loan operation of the Library. This service provides research materials to students, faculty, and staff from throughout North America. This position also supervises and staffs the Access Services Desk of the UNF Library part-time. Staffing the Access Services Desk may include responsibility for the supervision of the library facility. This position provides customer service based on University, Library, and departmental policies and procedures, library systems and their use, and library collections. Access to and maintenance of confidential student/employment records is required. This position troubleshoots procedural and system-related problems on behalf of library users. This position may be responsible for monitoring the Library’s security system and other security and safety matters involving the library building, collections, computers as well as operational concerns and closing the facility as scheduled. This position is required to maintain the kowledge and skills necessary to implement current department and Library-related policies and procedures. This position provides public service and access with respect to library materials and information in a courteous, positive, and proactive manner. This position regularly interacts and must communicate with UNF faculty, staff and student users. Problem-solving and good judgment and decision making are routine requirements.

Job Function:

* Circulation Desk Activities: Charging/discharging library materials. Processing applications for library privileges. Processing hold/recall transactions; receiving and returning library materials. Circulating course reserves and Interlibrary loan materials. Providing bibliographic assistance. Providing directional/Library/campus referral information to user. Training and supervising student workers. Supporting the Reserves and Interlibrary loan function by answering user inquiries.
Opening and closing the library building. Implementing safety/emergency procedures i coordination with campus authorities.
Responding to departmental telephone inquiries.
Assisting library users in use of Media Resources (videos, DVDs, CDs, etc.) Instructing and assisting with equipment use by library users. Providing reference information for media resources.

Marginal Functions:

Access Services supports each position in Access Services routinely participates in the other units within the department to provide continuous, efficient, high-quality library service to the UNF community. This includes:
a. Direct public service at the Circulation/Media/Checkout desk
b. Searching and verifying bibliographic citations
c. Responding to incoming Interlibrary loan requests
d. Receiving and processing course reserves
e. Pre-sorting and shelving books
f. Opening/packaging mail; processing new books
g. Pick-up and delivery of library materials
h. Assisting with stack maintenance. Retrieving library materials from the general collection
i. Communicating with library users and staff via correspondence, telephone, email, etc.
j. Building Safety/Security Monitor This position opens and closes the Library building as scheduled; implements library safety and security policies and procedures; coordinates with campus security personnel in emergency situations; assists in evacuating patrons from the building; monitors and reports facility problems or unsafe conditions to appropriate authorities; initiates work orders for repairs; monitors and maintains the integrity of the library’s security systems.

Required Qualifications:

A high school diploma and four years of experience directly related to the job functions. Directly related college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Knowledge of automated circulation systems, ILLiad, the interlibrary loan management system, library policies, services and general departmental procedures, academic research library operations, bibliographic searching techniques and the research process, e-mail, the Internet, and specialized automated systems and networked applications. Ability to learn new systems, operations and adapt/adjust to new procedures. Ability to enforce pertinent laws, codes, policies, and rules affecting and protecting the Library and its users. Ability to work collegially in a diverse environment with library staff and the University community. Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with library users. Ability to engage in problem-solving and decision-making. Ability to plan, set priorities, organize a work-related environment, and attend to detail. Ability to use and understand a library automated system. Ability to move, lift, soft, and shelve library materials. Ability to operate office equipment: phone, fax, copiers, microform reader/printers, etc.
