Departmental Overview

Data Science Undergraduate Studies (DSUS) offers a range of academic, co-curricular and enrichment programs—including the Data Science major and minor—with a wide-reaching impact both across UC Berkeley and beyond. Designed in collaboration with faculty from across Berkeley, Data Science invests students with deep technical knowledge, expertise in how to apply that knowledge in a field of their choosing, and an understanding of the social and human contexts and ethical implications of how data are collected, analyzed, and used. This combination positions graduates to help inform and develop solutions to a range of pressing challenges, from adapting industry to a new world of data, to amplifying learning in education, to helping communities recover from disaster.

DSUS is part of the College of Computing, Data Science and Society (CDSS), which strives to develop, implement and share high-quality, ethics-oriented and accessible curricula, educating a diverse student body in data science, computing and statistics. Core to the college is an understanding of how computing and data science affect equality, equity, and opportunity—and the capacity to respond to social challenges.

The DSUS Communications Director works collaboratively with staff and faculty leadership of Data Science Undergraduate Studies (DSUS) to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy for a wide range of programs offered through DSUS. Develops and implements comprehensive short and long-range strategic communication plans, programs and projects that meet DSUS' needs and effectively deliver desired messages to targeted audiences. The incumbent researches, develops, reviews and edits content across multiple platforms. Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with CDSS Communications and affiliated departments across CDSS. Directly supervised by DSUS Executive Director.

**This position is designated hybrid, with an expectation of 2-3 days per week of on campus work**

50% Communications Programs - In collaboration with DSUS leadership and college level communications team:
*Oversees comprehensive communications programs leading the continued development of the DSUS brand and messaging.
*Drives strategy and content creation for DSUS channels, including newsletters, website and social media--helping to maintain security, compliance, and brand alignment.
*Leads strategy for internal communications.
*Assists in the creation and promotion of campaigns that cultivate an environment of belonging for DSUS constituents.
*Serves as project manager for other communications projects (e.g., donor engagement, grant proposals , etc.).
*Partners with DSUS program leads to identify key promotional messages, statistics and testimonials to support DSUS and CDSS leadership in strategic outreach.
*Coordinates with counterparts, including internal and external institutions, departments, and organizations.
*Identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements.

35% Strategic Planning/ Strategic Initiatives - To support DSUS leads in refining and achieving program goals, including:
*Identifying core program goals, measuring success and impact, determining opportunities and needs for growth.
*Using data and strategic planning to continually refine benchmarks and focus for upcoming periods.
*To implement structure to drive program success, including: Creating opportunities for regular reflection on program success and challenges, as well as strategic planning for upcoming periods and implementing processes and procedures to organize work and facilitate interdepartmental communication.

*To enhance communication strategy to: Strategically funnel audiences (i.e. students, external partners) toward completing program goals, grow programs through strategic engagement with key audiences and liaise with college level leadership and partners, including the CDSS Communications and Development teams, to plan and execute DSUS communications priorities.

10% Assessment and Training:
*Regularly analyzes data to assess the effectiveness of communication strategies and develops plans for improvement.
*Provides communications trainings for DSUS stakeholders on best practices for websites, social media, and more.

5% Professional Development and Growth: Engages in opportunities for training, workshops, seminars, pertinent to the position.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various mechanisms and platforms, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most
    appropriate and effective applications.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
  • Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills, active listening and political acumen skills.
  • Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
  • Effective strategic professional who can clearly communicate complex issues to a variety of audiences.
  • Organized self-starter, able to work strategically and independently.
  • Effective bridge-builder, able to work across collaboratively with a diverse stakeholders including DSUS staff, faculty, students and campus partners.
  • Ability to successfully manage a workload that balances long-range planning with the unanticipated daily demands of managing publicly visible projects required.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and
    the field of Data Science.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $77,600 - $95,800, not to exceed $140,400 (grade 22).
