Unit Mission Statement:

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at William & Mary is the oldest program in modern languages in the United States. The department traces its beginning to the establishment of a professorship in modern languages at William & Mary in a curriculum reform instituted by Thomas Jefferson in 1779. Today that single professorship has grown to more than 50 faculty members offering courses in eight languages, literatures, and cultures. Faculty members of every rank are engaged in teaching at all levels, in study abroad programs, in a variety of research activities, and in service to the university, the community and the profession.

Position Summary:

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at William and Mary invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Arabic Studies that will begin August 10, 2024. Teaching expectation is two courses per semester. Successful applicants must possess the skills to teach compelling courses in both Arabic language courses (all levels) and other lecture and seminar-style courses in English, and to contribute to the William & Mary COLL (general education) curriculum. Duties include research, teaching, and service to the University. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body.

Required Qualifications:

Required: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at the time of appointment (August 10, 2024) in addition to having a successful teaching proficiency-based teaching record in an American University (including global sites of U.S. institutions of higher education.) The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of scholarly achievement or demonstrated potential as a scholar.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred: Previous experience in teaching and mentoring successful undergraduate research is preferred.
