Position Title:Assistant Professor of Modern Languages/Literatures (Hispanic Studies)
Unit Mission Statement:The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at William & Mary is the oldest program in modern languages in the United States. The department traces its beginning to the establishment of a professorship in modern languages at William & Mary in a curriculum reform instituted by Thomas Jefferson in 1779. Today that single professorship has grown to more than 50 faculty members offering courses in eight languages, literatures, and cultures. Faculty members of every rank are engaged in teaching at all levels, in study abroad programs, in a variety of research activities, and in service to the university, the community and the profession.
Position Summary:The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Hispanic Studies. Appointment will begin August 10, 2024. We are interested in individuals with research and teaching expertise in the Spanish-speaking world with a focus on Afro/Asian diaspora or the Hispanic Global South (e.g., Diaspora Studies, Africana Studies, or Asian/Asia-Pacific Studies) covering any period between the 19th and 21st centuries, and who foreground the nexus of literary & cultural studies, race, and intersectionality.
Duties include research, teaching, and service to the University. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body, and to make valuable contributions in the area of service and governance to the department and university.
Teaching expectation is 2 courses per semester. Successful applicants must possess the skills to teach compelling cultural studies courses in Afro/Asian diaspora or in the Spanish-speaking world, or Hispanic Global South and other lecture and seminar-style courses, such as Introduction to Hispanic Studies, Issues in Canon Formation, and our Capstone Seminars. Opportunities exist to contribute to our dynamic general education curriculum (https://www.wm.edu/as/undergraduate/coll/), and, as relevant, to contribute to interdisciplinary programs such as Africana Studies, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, European Studies, Latin American Studies, etc.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies, Spanish, or a related field at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2024). Candidates must possess the skills to teach Spanish language courses, and courses in Hispanic cultural studies at all levels. Evidence of previous teaching experience and native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English are required, as is a demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for students. Evidence of scholarly achievement or demonstrated potential as a scholar is required.
Preferred Qualifications:Previous experience in teaching and mentoring successful undergraduate research is preferred.
