Assistant Professor, Global Christianity - Department of Philosophy and Religion

The Department of Philosophy and Religion at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in contemporary Global Christianity at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall of 2024. The area of specialization is open, but must concern geographic regions outside of the United States and Latin America. The University welcomes applications from candidates who help foster its commitment to equity and inclusion.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Successful applicants will have a demonstrated command of the history, thought, and traditions of Christianity on a global scale. Applicants will have a demonstrated competence in the requisite languages, depending on AOS. REL 340 (Introduction to Christianity) and REL 348 (Global Christianity) will be a regular feature of the teaching rotation. In addition to teaching upper-level electives in Christianity in the relevant AOS, the successful candidate will teach in the University's General Education program (REL 101: Religions of the World and/or REL 102: Religion, Spirituality, and the Meaning of Life), and oversee the Christian Studies minor. The teaching load is 3/3, with 2 preparations per semester.

Qualifications:

A demonstrated program of research with the promise of significant publication is required. We look for candidates with an enthusiasm for academic service and a desire to contribute to the growth of the Religion program. Candidates should have the Ph.D. or dissertation in hand at the time of appointment. Evidence of teaching experience and potential for excellence must accompany the application.

Special consideration will be given to applicants whose AOS is in Africa or Asia. Candidates whose research and teaching intersect with other disciplines (e.g. anthropological, sociological, political, economic, medical, environmental, etc.) and contemporary global issues are especially desirable. Applicants must be trained in the academic methods of religious studies, although a wide range of methodological approaches is welcome.
