Vice President for Marketing and Communications
Roanoke College invites applications, nominations, and expressions of interest for The Vice President for Marketing and Communications (VPMC). Founded in 1842, Roanoke serves approximately 1,800 undergraduate students and is located in Salem, Virginia, just minutes from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Consistently found on lists of the top colleges in America, this small, private 21st century college provides transformative learning experiences grounded in the liberal arts, relationships, and experiential learning. The next VPMC will join colleagues who are eager to meet the challenges posed by higher education today and looking for an innovative, collaborative leader.
Reporting to the President and serving as a member of the President's Cabinet, VPMC champions Roanoke College's character, brand, reputation, and community through an innovative, dynamic, and comprehensive marketing and communications strategy. As the College's chief communications officer, the VPMC will serve as a pivotal institutional change agent and strategic partner for a new president and other senior leaders to write the next chapter in the Roanoke's nearly 200-year-old history—a story of a 21st-century small college on the move. This includes fostering partnerships across campus to articulate a compelling value proposition for prospective and current students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, donors, and friends of the College. The VPMC will work closely with Enrollment Management to create brand awareness, engage prospective and admitted students through compelling recruitment and yield communications, identify new markets, and focusing intentionally on cultivating interest among traditionally underrepresented and underserved communities to increase diversity and enrich the student experience.
The VPMC will lead a talented, creative, and collaborative marketing and communications team including design, video and photography, PR, web, and communications experts—the VPMC leads the core team and works with communications leaders in departments throughout the College. Functions within the marketing and communications division include digital communications; public and media relations; reporting and storytelling; graphic design and multimedia production; branding; crisis communications; and publications, including the college magazine. The VPMC will establish strong relationships with external consultants and agencies, as needed, to support strategic needs. The VPMC will also serve as the College's primary spokesperson for public and media relations, including proactive communications, reputational management, and crisis response. As such, the VPMC will foster relationships and develop strategies to build Roanoke's presence and brand in local, state, and national media outlets.
The Search Committee for Roanoke College's next VPMC is being assisted by Academic Search. Applications, nominations, and expressions of interest can be submitted in confidence to RoanokeVPMC@academicsearch.org. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, but only those received by Monday, October 16, 2023, can be assured full consideration.
Applications should consist of a substantive cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a list of five professional references with contact information and a note indicating the nature of your working relationships with each; references will not be contacted without the explicit permission of the candidate. For more information about the opportunity, institution, qualifications, and application process, please download the full position profile from the Academic Search website. Confidential conversations about this opportunity may be arranged by contacting Senior Consultant, Lisa Ryan (Lisa.Ryan@academicsearch.org).
