The Department of Psychological and Quantitative Foundations at the University of Iowa invites applications for two open-rank tenure-track faculty positions in our APA-accredited counseling psychology program. These full-time, academic year (9-month) positions will begin August 14, 2024.
These positions are essential to addressing the critical need for research, services, and training in the area of mental health affecting schools across the nation, and coincide with growing opportunities for unique collaborations, research and teaching support, and innovative scholarship found in our Department of Psychological and Quantitative Foundations. Training grants awarded to department faculty create opportunities to participate in new specialty tracks, while the increasing demand for undergraduate coursework in counseling and behavioral health makes for exciting possibilities for building curricula and programming for a new audience of enthusiastic students. The College of Education is home to the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health, an exceptional enterprise funded by a $20 million grant that is Iowa’s hub for school-based mental health research, training, professional learning, and clinical services. Scanlan’s expert staff and resources pave the way for pioneering collaborations.
In addition to contributing to this momentum, the successful candidates will advise counseling psychology doctoral students, engage in scholarly research, seek external funding, and teach graduate-level courses. The preferred candidates will have a strong commitment to a scientist-practitioner philosophy with a systems-based perspective, and a program of research related to the investigation and/or implementation of mental health services for individuals and communities, with a particular focus on individuals and communities from diverse backgrounds. Our APA-accredited program emphasizes social justice initiatives and community engagement opportunities for our students.
Prospective candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in counseling, clinical, or school psychology from an APA-accredited program.
(1) Established record or evidence of strong potential in scholarship relevant to applied counseling psychology, (2) Potential for securing external funds for research, training, and program development, (3) Ability to work collaboratively and with diverse populations, (4) Ability to teach, advise, and mentor graduate students in research and practice, (5) Licensed or eligible for licensure as a psychologist in Iowa, and (6) Demonstrated ability to create and foster an academic environment inclusive of culturally, linguistically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse populations.
(1) Established record of obtaining external funding, (2) Interest in undergraduate training and program development, (3) Evidence or promise of excellent teaching skills at the graduate level, including graduate student advising, and (4) Research area related to children, youth, and adolescents.
Major responsibilities include conducting an active, funded program of research and scholarship; teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses consistent with program, departmental needs; advising and mentoring graduate students in the counseling psychology program; and providing program, department, college, and professional service. The successful candidates will work in full collaboration with faculty members in counseling psychology to consider new initiatives within the college and university.

About the Counseling Psychology Program
The Counseling Psychology program at The University of Iowa is a doctoral program that was granted full accreditation by the American Psychological Association in the Spring of 1983. The program trains health service psychologists who are competent in counseling and psychological services informed by the integration of diverse scholarship. Our program strives to produce counseling psychologists who promote psychology as both a profession and a science and who apply acquired skills to improving psychological services to diverse communities. Given our belief that the profession of psychology is constantly changing to meet human needs, our faculty and students represent a variety of backgrounds and interests and serve a diverse array of communities.
