College/Department Information
The Department of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine was founded in 1993 as the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics. We seek to attract outstanding faculty and bright students by creating a welcoming, collegial, and collaborative environment to foster success and creativity. Our faculty's research focuses on a variety of fundamental areas, ranging from neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, brain injury, learning and memory, neuroprotection, development, inflammation, and regenerative medicine, using a broad repertoire of experimental approaches. Our department is also the home to the Transgenic and Genome Editing Core, which is supported by the Georgia Research Alliance.
The Medical College of Georgia is the state's only public medical school. Founded nearly 200 years ago in 1828 as the nation's fifth public medical school, the third medical school in the Southeast and the thirteenth in the nation, the Medical College of Georgia has one of the largest class sizes in the country. The medical school works to optimize health care in Georgia and beyond through education, discovery, and service.
Job Summary
A senior training position designed to learn through engagement in an advanced level of scientific technical and administrative work in support of research efforts in an assigned laboratory or clinical research setting. Participate in research data collection and documentation within relevant guidelines and protocols; develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures; publish results in scientific journals. Perform a variety of complex chemical, biological, cytologic, microscopic, histologic, surgical, clinical, statistical/computational and dissection procedures. Supervise undergraduate and graduate students.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities to include but not limited to:
Participate in project planning and development of research protocols while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines. Perform a variety of experimental studies including animal behavior, cell biology and molecular biology experiments. Experiments may include but not be limited to performing animal surgery, microinjection, behavioral testing, genotyping, western blot, real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry and various microscopy and imaging techniques. Analyze results of experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques and, if necessary, develop special computer programs to facilitate analysis. Assist in lab administrative activities.
Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature; summarize and evaluate findings; develop derivative applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects. Presents findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally, and internationally.
Compose articles for publication for scientific journals; review articles prepared by others.
Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants and other research personnel engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work. Advise principal investigators, other postdocs, students and other research personnel on research techniques procedures and other technological aspects of research activities.
Calibrate, troubleshoot, repair, and operate microscopes, computer-linked analytical equipment, dedicated computers, and other complex scientific equipment; instruct others in operation of equipment.
Perform all other related duties/tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong background in molecular biology, physiology, and cell biology. Previous experience with rodent handling, surgery, and histology/biochemistry/molecular biology related techniques.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Willingness and ability to work with research animals. Ability to work independently with only general supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality, complete work, and meet deadlines. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and prioritization skills. Proficient in Microsoft Word and other computer software/databases or willingness to learn.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
