Position Details:
One regular, part-time, district funded position, 24 hours per week, 12 months per year on the Oceanside campus. The work schedule is to be determined. The person selected for this position will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation.

Remote Work:
MiraCosta College believes that flexible work enables employees to achieve a more successful balance between work responsibilities and family life. The District offers the opportunity to telework (remote work) for certain positions, depending on the operational needs of the District and the provisions of the telework policy. Probationary and temporary employees are not eligible to telework unless approved by the appropriate vice president. No employee is guaranteed the right to telework. No employee shall be authorized to telework 100% of the time; regular, on-campus presence is expected for all District employees on a weekly basis.

Residency Requirement:
MiraCosta College Board Policy 7800: Employee Residency requires all classified staff, administrators, and temporary/hourly short-term employees to maintain and permanently reside in a principal place of residence in the state of California that is within two-hundred (200) road miles from the employee's regularly assigned district worksite. The purpose of the policy is to promote efficiency and continuity throughout all campus administrative functions, provide students with high quality assistance and accessibility to all academic and campus services, ensure that students receive an engaging education, and respond to emerging student needs.

The District may consider an individual request to temporarily reside outside of the State of California or outside the 200-mile limit on a case-by-case basis, not to exceed twelve consecutive months.



Salary Range: 21
Compensation: Starting at $40,174.80 per year (range 21, step 1), with annual salary step increases up to step 5. Basic Function:
The Grants Specialist manages donations, grants, and relationships with institutional donors (foundation, corporation, organization, and government) and is the primary point of contact internally for staff and faculty including: writing grants and solicitation materials; reviewing grants written by staff or consultants; gathering and interpreting data for compelling proposals; developing budgets; managing grant awards and facilitating grant compliance internally; preparing required reports and stewardship reports; implementing the institutional giving stewardship program; leading tours, in-person meetings, presentations, and site visits; researching prospects; and managing institutional donation tracking systems.

Distinguishing Characteristics:


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

1. Perform prospect research on federal, state and local agencies/programs, foundations and corporations to evaluate grant opportunities; network and develop relationships to facilitate grant acquisition.

2. Communicate with representatives of grantors to understand grant guidelines and requirements for submission; establish and maintain relationships with current grantors including regular written update reports on grant project activities, funder status and events.

3. Meet and communicate with pertinent faculty, staff and administrators in order to understand the college’s and specific programs’ funding needs, determining focus for grant efforts.

4. Prepare, submit and manage grant proposals to foundation, government and corporate sources; coordinate with college program faculty and staff to solicit information needed to write persuasive letters and grant proposals, refine program descriptions, generate budgets, delineate projected outcomes and assemble required documentation as needed.

5. Evaluate, review and modify narratives, program descriptions and budgets prepared for inclusion in grant proposals to ensure proper grammar usage, data accuracy, completeness and compliance with private foundation guidelines and college policies; comment on content and technique and assist responsible parties with any necessary revisions.

6. Establish and maintain the grant management system, including synopsis of grant opportunities, tracking of grant applications and proposals submitted, grant databases and boiler plate maintenance, grant tracking and reporting systems and recognition systems.

7. Oversee adherence to district policies regarding grant solicitation and other matters related to the grant process.

1. Train and coach college personnel on the grant-writing process and procedures.

2. Arrange and host meetings, presentations and site visits for grant pre- and post-award phases.

3. Oversee and ensure college grant projects are in compliance with funder requirements, policies, regulations, procedures, etc., and advise project managers on grant compliance issues as necessary and appropriate to protect the interests of the college.

4. Provide regular written updates and/or presentations to the Foundation Board, Board of Trustees and fund development team.

5. Perform related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:
To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree, and two years of grant development, grant writing and program development experience or comparable professional writing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

NOTE: For work experience, one “year” is defined as equivalent to 40 hours per week for 12 months, or at least 2,080 hours.



Desirable Qualifications:
  • Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish preferred.
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  • Demonstrated skill in relationship building with donors, including in-person visits and presentations.
  • Knowledge of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility principles.


Licenses & Other Requirements:
A valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the district’s vehicle insurance program.
