The Africana Studies Program and the Newcomb Art Department at Tulane University invite applications for a tenure-track position in African Art History at the rank of assistant or associate professor with tenure (pending positive review). The successful candidate will have a tenure home in the Art Department, with a joint appointment in the Africana Studies Program, with teaching and service divided equally between the two units. We encourage applications from scholars focused on visual/material culture from anywhere on the African continent and from any period, as well as those who do comparative work. We are especially interested inscholarship that engages themes related to museum studies, architecture and the built environment, environmental studies, media studies, gender and sexuality studies, or transcultural exchange and mobility.Appointment to begin July 1, 2024. PhD required at time of appointment; we welcome applicants trained outside the United States. Teaching will include lecture courses and seminars for undergraduate and graduate students in the area of specialty, as well as introductory courses in Africana Studies and Art History on a rotating basis. The teaching load is 2-2, with the expectation that the hire will recruit and mentor graduate students and participate in departmental and university service. The successful candidate will also play a key role in the establishment and launch of Crossroads Cohort: Africana Studies at the Intersection of Art History and Art Making, an innovative joint master’s degree program shared between the two units and supported by the recent acquisition of a $1M grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Students in the Crossroads Cohort will pursue a graduate program in Africana studies alongside an MA in art history or an MFA in a studio art discipline and enjoy the support of funding to underwrite unique Cohort enrichment experiences such as travel and conference attendance as well as summer internships. Faculty members in both units enjoy a collegial environment, flexibility in course offerings, accomplished and engaged students, and small class sizes. Generous support for both travel and research is available. Local resources include the Amistad Research Center, notable collections of African art at the New Orleans Museum of Art and Southern University at New Orleans as well as a number of local arts and heritage organizations and museums devoted to the culture of the African diaspora in New Orleans and the Gulf South.
