The Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time teaching straem position in the area of Japanese language. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024. Applicants must have earned a PhD degree, or a Master’s degree with appropriate experience, in Japanese Language Pedagogy, Japanese Linguistics, Japanese Applied Linguistics, or a closely related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. Native or near native fluency in Japanese is expected together with an excellent command of English. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths
. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in curriculum development, lecture preparation and delivery, including the development of online material/lectures, and teaching Japanese as a foreign language in a degree granting program at the undergraduate level. Experience in teaching all levels of Japanese, as well as organising extra-curricular activities is required. Familiarity with North American pedagogical approaches and experience in providing students with experiential learning opportunities are assets. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry, and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities in Japanese language education. Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below) as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing. Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Department of East Asian Studies is a multidisciplinary humanities department with established expertise in the histories, societies and cultures of East Asia. The department is home to an extremely popular undergraduate program and is strongly committed to graduate training. The department houses three in-demand language programs—Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. Language enrolments are growing and reflect the diverse populations that inhabit the city of Toronto.
