Job Summary:

The individual is expected to work collaboratively with all Principal Investigators and other Faculty members within the UC-CADD on all preclinical projects, to carry out preclinical drug development studies on rodents, swine and other animal models based on prioritized research programs, based on each program requirement (Non-GLP, GLP, etc). This responsibility will include keeping abreast of current literature on up-to-date standard of care in veterinary medicine, planning and organizing preclinical studies, interfacing with OLAR and IACUC on planned studies, formulating long- and short-term goals for each program, leading/performing sophisticated preclinical physiological assessment in small to large animals as Study Director, designing and performing appropriate experiments to achieve the funded project goals, evaluating laboratory data and protocols, leading team members on studies, and preparing/submitting manuscripts based on research conducted within the lab.

The individual is also expected to contribute to the direction of research conducted within the UC-CADD, and help design, prepare and submit grant applications to appropriate federal or private agencies to secure funding for UC-CADD. It is important that the individual interacts effectively with other members of the scientific and preclinical/clinical research communities and establish fruitful research collaborations. The individual is expected to present research in all appropriate venues to increase the awareness of research being performed in the lab, and to facilitate collaborative interactions. In addition, the individual is expected to participate in service activities within the department, the university and the broader scientific community that contribute to the accomplishment of department and university missions, and that promote the success and welfare of the broader scientific and medical community. This will include teaching and mentoring activities on techniques and preclinical research concepts to laboratory staff, post-graduate, graduate and undergraduate students, and delivering local/national/international presentations, designing/teaching preclinical physiology courses, and other administrative duties as needed.

    Conduct high quality preclinical drug development studies in small, medium and large (swine) animals as Study Director of Non-GLP and GLP studies Lead large multidisciplinary teams on preclinical experiments and programs Lead physiological assessment of small to large (swine) animals, inclusive of cardiac, pulmonary and neurological assessments Mentor and teach laboratory staff, junior faculty members, graduate students, post-graduate students (MD and PhD fellows), and other students in their research projects related to preclinical research topics Disseminate novel research findings in peer-reviewed journals Assist in obtaining grant/contract funding for the UC-CADD research center Contribute to the research direction of the UC-CADD research center Write study documents/reports and SOPs to funding agencies related to projects/techniques Supervise the work of 5-15 laboratory research staff direct reports Participate in national and international conferences and other in-person presentations where research findings will be disseminated

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.



· Education:
    Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) is required. Plus: A PhD advanced degree in Biology or relevant basic research field is required

· Experience:
    > 2 years of post-graduate working experience in preclinical research is required, focusing on swine or rodent physiology and imaging assessment of disease. Plus: > 1 years of standard veterinary practice with ICU treatment experience is required, caring for small to medium sized animals.

· Special Skills:

    Work experience in preclinical (rodent, swine, etc) animal surgical techniques is required. Plus: >5 publications in peer-reviewed journals is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
    ACLAM or similar certification Specialized training in Advanced Micro-CT Use Experience in holding formal or informal leadership roles (Lead Veterinarian, Core Leaders, Project Leader, etc) Knowledge in GLP compliant preclinical research

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    Independent judgement and self-directed work capabilities Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, technicians, supervisors, trainees and administrators on a regular basis Ability to lead a large group of staff on projects Ability to teach, mentor and supervise laboratory staff on lab-related and animal-related techniques. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple and competing deadlines: multitasking. Exceptional organization and project planning skills, and ability to set priorities and schedule work effectively Experience working in a collaborative team environment as leader. Experience in interpreting preclinical vital signs on small to large animals Experience in interpreting laboratory values, such as ABG, CBC, Clinical Chemistry and others Knowledge of basic veterinarian pharmacology including medication interactions, drug compatibility, drug toxicity and efficacy assessment with translatable endpoints. ICU procedural skills (intubation, central line placement, arterial line placement, chest tube placement) in medium to large sized animals such as swine. Experience with phlebotomy and intravenous drug administration, including continuous infusions, in small to large animals Experience with point of care testing tools (iSTAT, Glucometer, etc), and other ICU equipment (IV pumps, suction devices, etc). Experience with ventilator management, and imaging equipment utilization (MRI, CT, X-ray, etc) Ability to design studies that run across multiple programs Ability to supervise and mentor students to a successful project completion Knowledge and ability to make impactful contributions to research investigations Ability to create and present strong research presentations Ability to write and publish manuscripts Ability to work extended shifts as needed (12 hours each), including day and/or night shifts, and occasional holidays and weekends as needed. Ability to travel to off-site research facilities in Fort Collins to conduct preclinical research several times per month.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting hiring range for this position has been established at HIRING RANGE::

Assistant Professor: $100,000 to $125,000
