The largest among 10 departments in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, English offers a range of undergraduate majors and concentrations, minors, three masters programs (MA, MFA, and MSTC), as well as one joint PhD in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media (CRDM). We also offer many courses of interest to the University community as a whole, and we work with other units across campus — such as World Languages and Cultures, Africana Studies, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Communication, and the College of Education — to furnish multidisciplinary opportunities for NC State students. Located in the Research Triangle Area in Raleigh, North Carolina, the English department consists of a large, diverse faculty, staff, and student body that prepares graduates for a variety of careers.

We are especially interested in scholars with teaching experience and expertise in American Romanticism and Realism, and scholars with a secondary interest in Black Studies, Indigenous Studies, Hemispheric studies, transnational and transatlantic America, studies of a global early America (within and beyond the US). Scholars who can advance our goals of increasing transnational and global course offerings and courses that are informed by the history of race and ethnicity in the Americas are of particular interest, as are candidates who can further NC State University’s strategic goal (https://strategicplan.ncsu.edu/current-plan/wolfpack-2030-powering-the-extraordinary/). The new hire will teach in our BA Program in Literature, which includes period courses, major author courses, genre courses, diversity courses, global knowledge courses, interdisciplinary courses, as well as capstone courses for seniors. The new hire will also teach within the MA degree program, including the MA concentration in Literature, and may be involved in the multi-departmental PhD in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media (CRDM).

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a robust research agenda and participate in Department service as needed and appropriate.

• Ph.D. in English or equivalent degree in a related field (e.g., comparative literature, American Studies, African American Studies).
• A focus on American Romanticism/Realism, Black Studies, race or ethnicity, transnationalism, or hemispheric America is particularly welcome.
• Applicant must demonstrate evidence of teaching excellence, strong research and publication skills, and future research productivity.

• The candidate should have a publication record in American literature, with the potential for future growth.
• Strong commitment to excellence in teaching is expected, as is a willingness to build and support the literature program at NC State.

• The candidate should have teaching experience at the university level, preferably in American Literature to 1900, and demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence.
