The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at FAU is seeking an innovative, dynamic and collaborative clinical faculty member to serve as a pathology educator across all 4 years of the medical school curriculum. Teaching in the pre-clerkship basic science courses as a lecturer, pathology lab director, small group facilitator and serving as the pathology cross-discipline clerkship director. The academic pathologist will coordinate pathology education in the undergraduate medical education curriculum, as well as serve in other potential clinical and non-clinical roles within the College based on their experience and expertise. This position will join the Department of Medicine or Surgery as an Assistant/Associate Professor and report to the Assistant Dean for Medical Education/Curriculum and ultimately the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and the Chair of the Department of Medicine. FTE for this position will range from .5-1.0 depending on what education, research and/or clinical roles the faculty member takes on and will be negotiated and finalized prior to hiring.
The academic pathologist is responsible for fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment for faculty, staff and medical students. The pathologist collaborates with course directors, clerkship directors, and College of Medicine (COM) leadership to ensure horizontal and vertical integration of the pathology, histology, anatomy and physiology curriculum across the continuum of the MD program. Pathology is an important component of the pre-clinical courses spanning the first two years of the curriculum and the clinical clerkships/courses in the third and fourth year, as well as critical for student performance on the NBME and USMLE examinations. These are complex courses involving multiple full time and volunteer faculty.
Student activities in pre-clinical science courses include small group case-based discussions, workshops, lectures, laboratory work, exercises with standardized patients, an interprofessional education program with nursing, social work and pharmacy students, a half-day community preceptorship in each year, experiences in clinics for the underserved, simulation activities in the COM’s Simulation Center and assessments including exams, lab practicals and OSCEs. Student activities in clinical clerkships include weekly academic half-day didactics covering multiple medical specialties, and assessments including exams and OSCEs. Other essential learning objectives and subject matter are integrated throughout the curriculum including professionalism, health disparities and healthcare inequities, communication, team-based patient-centered care, complex chronic disease management, health promotion and disease prevention, the political and social determinants of health, reflective practice and self-improvement, and evidence-driven decision making and lifelong learning. Teaching responsibilities may also be assigned with other learners in the COM including graduate masters and PhD students as well as post-baccalaureate students as time allows.
This position supports a 12-month, non-tenured Assistant/Associate Professor who will contribute to the holistic mission of the COM as an educational leader, participate in research and scholarship, provide service to the College and the community. In addition, opportunities for physician candidates to provide clinical services may exist. The academic pathologist responsibilities will include the following:
- Develop, coordinate, and conduct COM Pathology labs, including ongoing innovations and enhancements.
- Teach anatomy, histology and pathology in all the COM basic science courses in the preclinical curriculum which includes Fundamentals of Biomedical Science, Neuroscience and Behavior, and a series of four systems-based Pathophysiology and Therapeutics courses. This content is delivered using selected lectures, team-based learning and other large classroom sessions.
- Serve as the Pathology Cross-Discipline Clerkship Director in the clinical curriculum.
- Serve as a facilitator for pre-clinical basic science small group problem-based learning cases (PBL, IQ, SLIQ) and other small group case-based teaching as time permits.
- Teach pre-clinical students in the Foundations of Medicine courses, which may include facilitation of Science of Clinical Practice (SCP) sessions, other small group sessions, and lectures as time permits.
- Teach M3 students in the third-year academic half day and M4 students in Transition to Residency (TTR) small group sessions and/or lectures as requested.
- Provide a high-quality education for the students and ensure compliance with all LCME accreditation standards.
- Develop curricular materials and student performance assessments for basic science and clinical courses.
- Participate in Learner Assessment for all clinical assessments (i.e. OSCEs, ICA week, etc.) as time permits.
- Teach anatomy, histology and/or pathology in our graduate programs including master’s program, Ph.D. program and new post-bac program.
- Advise and mentor both undergraduate medical students, residents as well as graduate students.
- Attend monthly curriculum meetings as well as any other necessary meetings to review student performance, curricular implementation issues, and work with relevant curriculum committees to respond to needs for quality improvement throughout the curriculum.
- Serve on relevant College of Medicine and University committees as required or requested.
- Participate in LCME preparation and implementation.
- Conduct scholarly work related to medical education, anatomy, pathology, histology and/or clinical practice or scholarship in some other area in which the candidate can collaborate with faculty, community partners, and trainees.
- Perform other special teaching projects and duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education and Department Chair.
M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited institution, completion of a U.S. residency, and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of assistant professor or higher required.
A Florida medical license or eligibility for Florida licensure required.
American Board of Pathology (ABPath) or related specialty, preferred.
Significant teaching experience with medical students, and demonstrated teaching excellence documented by peer and learner evaluations and possibly teaching awards preferred.
Significant experience in curriculum development, lectures/seminars; small groups; and clinical settings; and expertise in assessment of learner performance preferred.
Consistent track record of scholarship relevant to the priorities and institutional strategic plan of an academic health sciences center including invited lectures, enduring materials, peer reviewed publications and/or grant funded projects, is desirable.
Exceptional professionalism, independence, dependability, time management skills, the ability to be flexible, adaptable, ability to demonstrate cultural humility, manage multiple demands and effectively communicate (oral and written) with a wide range of university and health care community stakeholders from diverse backgrounds is required.
