The Department of Political Science at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in international relations with a specialization in China, East Asian international relations, and international political economy, beginning in August 2024. UMBC is a Carnegie Research 1, community-engaged, minority-serving institution focused on inclusive excellence.
This job is one of four positions in a cluster hire in Asian Studies. UMBC is searching in 2023-2024 for Asian Studies specialists in Ancient Studies, History, Philosophy, and Political Science. Faculty hired as part of the cluster will have opportunities to collaborate across disciplines and develop alongside a cohort of new faculty members with an interest in Asian Studies. Though the new faculty members will be housed in their respective academic departments, they will also be affiliate faculty in, and contribute to the success of, the interdisciplinary Asian Studies Program at UMBC through their course offerings, participation in research seminars, and engagement with Asia-related programming on campus.
Preference will be given to candidates who have a Ph.D. in political science/international relations, or will have a Ph.D. in hand by August 2024. Applicants must provide evidence of a focused, ambitious research agenda and a commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching. Candidates must also describe how their research, teaching, and/or life experiences contribute to "inclusive excellence," such as their ability to work with underserved and diverse populations and their capacity to respond in pedagogically productive ways to the competence, aspirations, and needs of students from diverse backgrounds. The successful candidate will teach two introductory sections of International Relations (counting as two courses) and upper-level undergraduate courses in Chinese politics and foreign policy, East Asian international relations, and international political economy The annual teaching load is five courses.
