Position Summary:

Assistant or Associate Professor – Meat Science Extension and Teaching. This is a nine-month, tenure track or tenured appointment (65% Extension, 30% Teaching, 5% Service) with two months of summer salary (11.111% per month) guaranteed in the Department of Animal and Dairy Science (ADS, in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia (UGA). The position will be located at the UGA Athens Campus. It is expected to develop and provide leadership for a relevant nationally/internationally recognized meat science Extension and teaching program.

Major Responsibilities: The individual is expected to develop and provide leadership for a relevant nationally/internationally recognized meats Extension program. Extension activities include interaction with industry, county agents, and other scientists in developing a state-of-the-art information/technology transfer program for the meats industry. This faculty member will serve as a resource on meat processing, fresh and processed meat production and meat evaluation for the meat industry, 4-H and FFA meat judging coaches, and HACCP training, and is expected to develop, or contribute to, a comprehensive meat science curriculum to include topics in meat evaluation, fresh meats, and processed meats; advise undergraduate and graduate students; mentor students interested in industry work experiences/internships; lead students in extracurricular learning experiences such as Intercollegiate Meat Judging; and provide guest lectures to support existing courses. The specific Extension and applied research program will be determined based on the successful candidate’s area(s) of expertise, but emphasis will be placed on the ability to develop an externally funded, applied research program. This faculty member will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in meat science, and a graduate course in their area of expertise within the department.

Additional Requirements:

To be considered at the rank of Associate Professor, candidates must have at least 5 full years in rank at the Assistant Professor level. To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an Associate professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification:

  • A proven record of excellence in meat sciences is expected.
  • Post-doctoral or prior training that includes HACCP, further processing, or effective workshop development targeting industry needs is desirable.
  • Candidates with a proven record of conducting and publishing innovative research and outreach programming, and securing extramural funding are highly encouraged to apply.
  • History of participation in, or coaching, intercollegiate meat judging is preferred.
