Tracking Code23599931890721Job Description

The School of Music at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts seeks a voice teacher at the rank of Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) to join the Department of Voice. All voice types will be considered.

The Boston University School of Music was the first institution in the United States to grant a degree in music. Today, the School of Music trains musicians, educators, composers, and scholars in strong undergraduate and graduate programs. Each year the School of Music presents hundreds of public concerts, recitals, operas, and other performances, as part of the greater resources and vibrant scholarly community of Boston University as a whole, and the wider intellectual and musical offerings of the Boston metropolitan area.

Boston University is an AAU institution with a rich tradition dedicated to inclusion and social justice. We are proud to be the first American university to award a Ph.D. to a woman, and we celebrate our record of and commitment to inclusiveness. The College of Fine Arts includes diversity as one of its core strategic goals. The successful applicant will enjoy working in an inclusive school that values cultural and ethnic diversity and will contribute to ongoing efforts to promote equity for people of all races and genders.

Required Skills

The successful candidate will possess a substantive performance profile at national and international levels, evidence of student/alumni success at the college level, teaching experience in voice performance courses such as song literature, special topics, or vocal pedagogy, and administrative and leadership experience within an academic environment. In addition, a successful applicant will enjoy working in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion. A terminal degree or demonstrated professional equivalent is required; previous teaching at the college level is required. This is a non-tenure track position.

The position requires vocal instruction of both male and female students in the undergraduate (BM) and graduate vocal performance programs (MM, DMA) as well as Departmental and Opera Institute Performance Diploma (PD). The successful candidate will show evidence of collegial and professional working relationships within voice/choral/opera realms and exhibit an aptitude for and interest in the potential for eventually chairing the Department of Voice.

DO NOT APPLY THROUGH THE BOSTON UNIVERSITY HR WEBSITE.

Qualified applicants should submit the following:

  • Cover letter of application
  • Curriculum vitae
  • A link to a personal website with audio/video samples that speak to professional success (i.e., artistic, teaching/mentoring, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives)
  • Three letters of recommendation sent directly from recommenders
  • List of three (3) additional professional references with contact information who may be contacted

All application materials should be sent via email at musicsearch@bu.edu and must be received by October 1, 2023. Anticipated date of appointment: July 1, 2024.

BU conducts a background check on all final candidates for certain faculty and staff positions. The background check includes contacting the final candidate’s current and previous employer(s) to ask whether, in the last seven years, there has been a substantiated finding of misconduct violating that employer’s applicable sexual misconduct policies. To implement this process, the University requires a final candidate to complete and sign the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” after execution of an offer letter.

We are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, military service, pregnancy or pregnancy-related condition, or because of marital, parental, or veteran status. We are a VEVRAA Federal Contractor.

The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
