Departmental Overview

Since 2005, the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SCET) has helped tens of thousands of students learn innovation and entrepreneurship skills and developed the foundation of Berkeley's entrepreneurship ecosystem, with SkyDeck, the Fung Institute, the Engineering Leadership Professional Program, Global Venture Lab, and an extensive network of Silicon Valley and Global partners.

This position involves oversees planning and implementation of all major aspects of SCET's Executive and Professional Program with complete responsibility for administrative and programmatic activities.

This is a 1-year contract appointment with the possibility of extension and/or conversion to career.

Responsibilities

60% Directs and administers an independent program with complete responsibility for administrative and programmatic activities. Oversees planning and implementation of all major aspects of SCET Executive and Professional Program open and custom platform development and administration. Delivers and optimizes existing, long-standing open-enrollment Engineering Leadership Professional Program Develops and delivers 2+ custom programs/year to optimize experience for audience and ensure partner loyalty. Researches and creates program syllabi and identifying, engaging and managing instructors. Identifies and cultivates industry partner relationships to optimize recruitment and program participants. Recruits participants among global industry, international organizations and worldwide university partners. Responsible for day-to day program management and execution, including human resources, maximizing quality assurance/improvement. Develops and manages P&L, and optimize processes and back-end administration. Manages student and staff coordinators to ensure delivery all aspects of programing. Initiates and supervises front-end and back-end marketing and communications. Establishes center-based policies and practice to optimize Center-wide executive/professional program coordination and ensure consistency with University policies and procedures, and meet the unique needs of the program and its constituents. Participation may also include teaching, moderating discussions, and mentoring within the programs.

30% Identifies and pursues Executive and Professional Program funding opportunities and revenue streams including expansion and iterations of existing programs and development of new programs. Actively identifies and develops SCET-direct and indirect opportunities to build reach and platform revenue, engaging universities and potential industry sponsors and meeting the highest academic and professional standards. Projects may include development and delivery of training programs both in-person and virtual, short-term boot-camps, long-term mentoring programs, and other related activities. Provides leadership for design and implementation. Activities include: customer outreach and needs assessment, gauging internal capabilities, drafting proposals and spearheading negotiations, overseeing planning, syllabus development, instructor recruitment/management, all communications, operations, day-to-day execution and evaluation, collaborating with SCET Director of Operations and across campus departments not only on contract and agreements, aligning with University internal partners also focused on delivering instruction and donations. Participation may also include teaching, moderating discussions, and mentoring within the programs. Optimizes process to enable SCET-indirect opportunities to build reach and revenue by engaging with a pre-approved group of preferred partners, establishing guidelines and processes for program approval, delivery, marketing and evaluation.

5% Leads short- and long-term planning for the platform. Determines program priorities, develops strategic goals, and share with board and CoE leadership. Coordinates project-based activities into an integrated partner- and client-focused program. Monitors strategic direction of the program with respect to funding new projects and ongoing oversight of existing projects to ensure achievement of mission. Directs long term planning and develops policies and procedures for multiple related projects.

5% Represents the program to other departments, the University, partners, clients and the public. Develops and maintains working relationships inside and outside the University to forward the mission of SCET's Executive and Professional Programs. Participates in professional activities relevant to carrying out the mission of SCET and maintenance of its standards and visibility as an international leader in innovation and entrepreneurship. Establishes and convenes working groups and committees of academics, professionals, and other key persons to provide advice and review of program elements as needed. Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short- and long-term planning.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence/persuade all levels of staff as well as a broad community of international academic, government and industry partners.
  • Advanced ability to work and think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups including campus academic community, international partners, other universities and the public to achieve results.
  • Expert ability to develop new and maintain existing partnerships and negotiate agreements.
  • Highly skilled fundraising experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles of effective management, instructional development and adult learning.
  • Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others.
  • Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
  • Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Academic background and/or recognized expertise in business management, entrepreneurship and innovation.
  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) preferred.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $105,500 to $200,700 annually. This 1-year, 100% FTE contract position is eligible for full benefits.
