Full-time faculty, Fine Arts Dept

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: May 23, 2023
Deadline:

The Department of Fine Arts at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design, University of Pennsylvania seeks a candidate to teach courses in animation and foundation design courses. The teaching load of this full-time lecturer rank, five sections per academic year, would be considered a full-time position and will be eligible for benefits.

Two of the course types are:

FNAR 2100 Computer Animation
Through a series of studio projects this course introduces techniques of 2D and 3D computer animation. Emphasis is placed on time-based design and storytelling through animation performance and montage. Students will develop new sensitivities to movement, composition, cinematography, editing, sound, color and lighting.

Maya and Aftereffects are the foundational applications introduced in this course.

DSGN 0010 Art, Design and Digital Culture
This course is an introduction to the fundamental perception, representation, aesthetics, and design that shape today's visual culture. It addresses the way artists and designers create images; design with analog and digital tools; communicate, exchange, and express meaning over a broad range of media; and find their voices within the fabric of contemporary art, design, and visual culture. Emphasis is placed on building an extended form of visual literacy by studying and making images using a variety of representation techniques; learning to organize and structure two-dimensional and three-dimensional space, and designing with time-based and procedural media. Students learn to develop an individual style of idea-generation, experimentation, iteration, and critique as part of their creative and critical responses to visual culture.

In addition to these two courses, other courses will be matched with the candidate based on their interests and experience.

Qualifications
Candidates must have a Master of Fine Arts degree and experience teaching 3D computer animation and foundational digital design courses. Since the faculty will advise students on project development, knowledge of animation in design, entertainment, independent animation production, and contemporary art will be essential. Candidates should have an exhibition or professional production record and two or more years of teaching experience at the university level.

Application Instructions
Candidates should apply online by submitting a cover letter detailing relevant professional and teaching experience, a curriculum vitae, the names and contact information for three professional and/or academic references (please do not solicit letters) and a brief statement (250 words) of teaching interests and capabilities. A separate statement (250 words) that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion within higher education and/or the community should also be included in the application materials.

We will review applications in November and continue to accept applications until the position or positions are filled.
