Position Summary: A successful Sustainability Coordinator and Alpine Ski coach at Clarkson University will provide effective leadership in combining the university’s sustainability efforts with the vision of athletics to reduce its unit’s carbon footprint. Duties will include researching and identifying new opportunities for emissions reductions and carbon offsets, working with the Institute for a Sustainable Environment to identify and quantify benefits from peer-reviewed forest projects to offset emissions from the athletics department’s travel related emissions, determining solutions for the athletics department to reduce travel emissions, and serving on the University’s Sustainability Committee This position will also include duties as the Alpine Ski coach who will provide effective leadership in each of the following areas in relation to the sport: recruiting, teaching/coaching, counseling, marketing, alumni relations, fund raising, and sport administration. It will be necessary to prioritize and balance these activities in a manner that best promotes and advances their sport within all Clarkson University, USCSA and NCAA rules and regulations.

This is a 10-month position that requires the applicant to reside on campus due to job duties, housing will be provided.

General Purpose: Coordinate and oversee efforts to reduce the university’s carbon footprint and reach its sustainability goals. Recruit and teach successful student athletes in the sport of Alpine Skiing that will promote and demonstrate the mission and goals of Clarkson University. Act as the link between the university’s Institute for a Sustainable Environmental and the Athletics Department to further improve the combined sustainability efforts and student experience.

Remote Workdays: This is a full time on Campus position with zero remote workdays.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Research peer-reviewed forest projects to offset emissions to reach the goals set out by the university’s climate pledge.
  • Work with the Institute for a Sustainable Environment to establish a case study that quantifies the benefits of such a peer-reviewed forest project to offset emissions from the athletics department’s travel related emissions
  • Publish results to add to scientific literature
  • Identify opportunities for the athletics department to reduce travel emissions
  • Provide a vision, coordinate and implement a strategy across the athletic department to either reduce or offset the carbon footprint of travel related emissions of the athletics’ department by 50%
  • Serve on the Universities Sustainability Committee
  • Promote the mission and goals of Clarkson University, the Institute for Sustainability, the USCSA, NCAA and the athletic department
  • Recruit quality student-athletes who will fit the academic and athletic profile for Clarkson University
  • Evaluate prospective student-athletes and decide whether they are potential members of the Clarkson University Alpine Ski Team.
  • Determine a recruiting plan for each academic year to evaluate and recruit student-athletes to Clarkson University
  • Effectively develop a teaching/coaching plan that best utilizes the strengths (individual and collective) of the Alpine Ski Team
  • Develop training and race preparation plans
  • Assist student-athletes with their academic progress by implementing study halls and coordinating with the Student Success Center
  • Work with the athletic administration to develop appropriate non-conference and conference schedules
  • Develop a positive image for the alpine ski program through various media outlets
  • Work with the compliance coordinator to ensure program compliance with all NCAA, league and University rules and regulations
  • Hire, instruct, and evaluate appropriate support staff (assistant coaches, student managers, volunteer coaches)
  • Develop and promote community activities including but not limited to summer camps, leagues, or community service activities
  • Promote the success of the program, department, and university as a primary contact for interested alumni
  • Effectively manage and balance the alpine ski budget annually
  • Establish all travel itineraries to away intercollegiate contests
  • All other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and Recreation

Essential Skills: Conducting research; Understanding of carbon emissions and offsets, Quantitative modeling and statistical computing (R or Python) skills to create and use appropriate mathematical models; Identifying important stakeholder needs to collectively benefit from carbon-offset projects; Tactical and technical expertise in the sport of alpine skiing; excellent communication skills; ability to multi-task; must be able to problem solve, suggest and implement solutions.

Education:

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in environmental engineering, science, policy, or related field
  • Alpine Skiing Coaching Certification (USSA Level 100 or equivalent)

Experience:

Minimal Experience: Previous work with quantitative sustainability metrics; experience in conducting scientific research; Skilled in using I-Tree and ArcGIS software; Ability to successfully present and implement research findings; Previous collegiate coaching experience; Demonstrated commitment to furthering the goals and objectives of both, the University and Athletics Department, Ability to successfully recruit quality student-athletes, Understanding of the role of the student-athlete in a competitive academic/athletic environment, and Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate to a variety of constituency groups. Knowledge of the NCAA Division III rules and regulations.

Preferred Experience: History of successfully decreasing the carbon footprint of organizational entities. At least two years as a collegiate ski coach and an understanding of the trends of sustainability efforts in higher education.
