Sr. Research Specialist II
The laboratory of Dr. Steven Farber has an exciting opportunity to join the lab as a Sr. Research Specialist II. The Farber Lab utilizes the zebrafish to study lipid modification and transport processes, as well as the regulation of lipid metabolism. This individual will be expected to design and carry out laboratory experiments, working independently and also collaboratively with individuals in the lab, the Biology Department or from other institutions. These efforts will require effective management and prioritization of multiple projects. This position requires a thorough understanding and vigilant implementation of scientific protocols and a strong background in zebrafish research. The Senior Research Specialist II will contribute to current research projects related to lipid metabolism, support laboratory members, and maintain fish stocks. This person will be responsible for ensuring that students, technicians, and visiting scientists are trained and supported in their work. The successful candidate should have expertise working with zebrafish, strong molecular biology background, and experience with maintaining the laboratory. This person should be able to plan and conduct experiments with minimal guidance from PI. This person will also serve as a project manager on collaborative projects and support JHU faculty wanting to perform zebrafish experiments.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

General Lab Support

  • Independently perform scientific assays/experiments relevant to specific projects.


  • Contributes to the preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals.


  • Analyzes and interprets results, summarizes, and reports data to the principal investigator and other collaborators as well as presents findings in laboratory meetings


  • Supervises junior research technicians and undergraduate workers.


  • At the request of the PI, maintains specific transgenic and mutant fish lines.


  • At the request of the PI, mentors and trains undergraduate researchers.


  • Ensures biosafety procedures are appropriately set-up and enforced and laboratory personnel receives training and is following procedures.
  • At the request of the PI, may be required to order supplies and reagents, monitor inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, logs orders upon receipt.
  • At the request of the PI, may be required to prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Prepares (clean & sterilize) glassware and instruments used in research experiments.
  • At the request of the PI, provides training and oversight of others working in the laboratory.
  • Maintains records and ensures adherence to all regulatory requirements.
  • Periodic meetings with PIs to review priorities, personnel performance, needs, and suggestions for improvements.
  • Exchanges non-routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate.
  • At the request of the PI, helps fish facility with feeding or maintenance when short-staffed.


Specific Lab Duties

  • Microinjection of genome editing reagents (e.g. CRISPR and TALEN), plasmids, and all supporting activities to generate mutant and transgenic zebrafish.
  • In consultation with the PI, develop, design and manage specialized zebrafish projects with both JHU and nonJHU faculty.
  • Troubleshoot and apply specialized scientific knowledge and experience to support both collaborative and lab member projects
  • A significant component of this position involves training collaborators and lab members on general zebrafish husbandry, microinjections, genotyping, and any other zebrafish skills they may need for their project.
  • Maintains precise records of work performed.
  • Actively contributes to laboratory meetings and planning sessions.

  • Knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques.
  • Strong organizational and computer skills, meticulous attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and effectively.


Physical Requirements

  • Occasionally lifts and /or carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds.


  • Occasionally stoops and bends.


  • Occasionally reaches and grasps with arms and hands above head.


  • Work is performed in a normal laboratory environment where there are relatively few physical discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise, or similar.


  • Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low-dose radiation, toxic chemicals and acids, and presence of carcinogenic substances.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
  • Six year's experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree and 10+ years relevant zebrafish lab experience.
  • Zebrafish research experience.

Starting Salary Range: Min $62,780 - Max $110,010 Annually ($62,780 budgeted; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
