Position Summary

The primary responsibilities of the IT Communications Technician are installation, support, and troubleshooting of campus cable and network infrastructure. This includes support for large wiring projects, complete move, add and change work orders for voice, network service, and wireless network infrastructure.

The responsibilities and duties of the IT Communications Technician include but are not limited to:
  • Field network installation and configuration for a complete installation of the wireless or wired network devices including Access Point install and provisioning, switch port activation, switch installation, etc.
  • Configure PBX or UCaaS system for voice work order needs
  • Install Category 6 cables as part of work order requests
  • Update ServiceNow tickets
  • Assist with installation of communication cable infrastructure

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The mission of the Information Technology Division (ITD) is to develop the long-term infrastructure, services, and strategy necessary to support the University's mission of learning, discovery, and engagement. The IT Division has the stewardship responsibility for core IT assets on campus and the obligation to provide the services, training, and community building necessary to realize the benefits of those investments across the San Diego State University community.

Information Technology and Network Infrastructure (ITNI) is responsible for providing the infrastructure to support the campus IT needs. ITNI supports the campus networks and Internet access, including all wired and wireless networking. ITNI provides campus telephone service for faculty and staff, including voice mail, call centers, and other voice services. We install and support campus fiber and copper cable infrastructure for all campus buildings. ITNI supports these services on the main campus, residence halls, IVC, Brawley, and off-site foundation buildings

Education and Experience

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical systems and equipment is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through an associate of arts degree in electronics, telecommunications, or industrial technology or equivalent education, training, and/or directly related experience. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Equipment/Systems Specialist include a basic knowledge of electronic (digital or analog) theories, mechanical design, and understanding of the operation and use of the equipment and systems commonly utilized in the assigned area

Key Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional working experience working with cabling installation, preferably Category 6 Cabling systems
  • Experience in installation of telecommunications cable system including twisted pair and coax
  • Working knowledge of the lower three layers of the Open Systems Interconnection model
  • Versed in the communications infrastructure aspects of systems and networks
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles of inside and outside plant engineering and construction
  • Experience installing, troubleshooting, and providing support for Network Analyst and Ethernet connections

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,834 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,625 - $7,216 per month.
