  • Employees of Facility Services are considered essential staff and must report to work when the university is closed for emergencies. This position is required to participate is on-call, call back duties and snow removal, which can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Under established circumstances will respond to emergency dispatch calls within set timeframes Administrative or Campus Living buildings.
  • Travel between campus locations is a regular part of the position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive, on university business to pass an online defensive driving course and submit their driver's license number for periodic records review. Job Description

Northern Arizona University's Facility Services: Building Access Services is now hiring Building Access Technicians (entry, intermediate, senior or lead) to join their team. The Building Access team is seeking to hire at a variety levels depending on candidate experience.

Under the general direction of the Manager, Building Access for Facility Services, the Building Access Technician (entry, intermediate, senior or lead) works closely with other Facility Services trades. This position works in a fast-paced environment and requires exceptional customer service skills. The person selected for this position must be a consistent and reliable self-starter, have a strong work ethic, a real teamwork mentality, be adaptable, a quick learner, and have excellent problem-solving skills.

Building Access Technician

Locksmithing Services - 60%
  • Inspects, installs, removes, replaces, and repairs manual and electronic locking and security devices according to established standards.
  • Practices and implements baseline skills in manual and electronic locking and security devices Assists in locksmithing services to ensure campus facilities are properly secured.
  • Gathers and analyzes basic information related to institutional building access safety plans to be used for recommendations.
  • Escalates issues and questions to senior staff.
  • Adjusts doors, and any related hardware to doors are closing and latching in a proper manner.
  • Repairs and/or changes combinations on safes.
  • Cuts new or duplicate keys from existing keys, patterns or codes.
  • Helps all shops in maintaining accessibility to the campus for maintenance purposes.
  • Provides day to day service and maintenance for assigned buildings and equipment maintenance schedules, to ensure the best use of resources available
  • Assists the supervisor with ensuring a sufficient inventory of materials and supplies.
  • Maintains current knowledge and skills of industry best practices.
  • Answers trouble calls of various types in various buildings.
  • Ensures that OSHA and general safety regulations are maintained.

Customer Service - 20%
  • Receives and responds to inquiries from campus members regarding NAU building access policies.
  • Escalates issues and questions to senior staff.
  • Assists in locksmithing services to ensure campus facilities are properly secured
  • Communicates weekly schedule, and any changes to it, with supervisor or lead, as directed.
  • Maintains frequent communications with building managers, project managers and other trades in regard to work request status and on-going projects.
  • Gives and receives information regarding work processes by text messages, two-way radio- responds to work order requests and needs for assistance through various communication methods.
  • Coordinates with contracted trades for timely project completion. Independently notes, establishes plans, (long term and short term) for repairs, improvements, and upgrades to facilities and equipment.
  • Confers with supervisor and lead on a regular basis, discussing work processes and problems, receives counseling and instructions.
  • Maintains effective communication with all customers across campus, and foster a team relationship that allows for collaborative problem solving and process improvement.
  • Takes part in initiating measures to improve customer service.

Admistrative Responsibilties - 15%
  • Accountable for submitting daily work logs and completing work order repair information.
  • Responsible for submitting online forms for Requests of Absence (eROA) and completing timesheet and supplemental pay information for payroll as directed.
  • May be required to prepare labor and material estimates. Discuss with customers, project managers and/or management staff design requirements and/or design problems with access control systems.
  • Help prepare documentation and procedures to efficiency of the department with Supervisor.
  • Maintains shop master key system.

Building Access Technician, Intermediate

Locksmithing Services - 50%

Testing, Inspection and Quality Control - 20%
  • Inspects buildings and other structures using pre-established check-sheets determines functional systems and detects malfunctions and needed repair.
  • Inspects fire doors and make repairs or adjustment to is compliant with fire codes.
  • Assists Fire Life Safety staff and the Fire Marshal for NAU, in any area directed by supervisor or lead.
  • Tests and repairs all access control systems for NAU.
  • Tests and evaluates new access systems performance and reliability.
  • Inspects new construction on campus as directed by supervisor or lead
  • Attends regular safety meetings.
  • Attends work unit staff meetings; receives information and participates in problem-solving activities and functions.
  • Work product consists of completed work assignments; complete customer satisfaction, adherence to safety laws, rules and policies, and compliance with national and local building codes.
  • Responsible for performing all tasks within established guidelines and instructions; adhering to and demonstrating all safety rules and procedures; and detecting unsafe work conditions and assisting in correcting them in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Performs periodic standard inspection and preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.

Job functions and duties are similar to the position of Building Access Technician, Intermediate, but this position is expected to assist the Building Access Technician, Intermediate with the following:
  • Escalated issues and questions.
  • Perform at a higher level of independence and autonomy.
  • Assist in scheduling and planning work necessary for the shop.

Building Access Technician, Lead

Job functions and duties are similar to the position of Building Access Technician, Senior, but this position is expected to assist the Manager, Building Access Shop with the following:
  • Inventory and budget management.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • 1-2 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Building Access Technician, Intermediate
  • High school degree.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Building Access Technician, Senior
  • High school degree.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Locksmith school certification.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Building Access Technician, Lead
  • High school degree.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience.
  • Locksmith school certification.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Building Access Technician
Salary range begins at $37,584. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Building Access Technician, Intermediate
Salary range begins at $41,421. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Building Access Technician, Senior
Salary range begins at $47,634. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Building Access Technician, Lead
Salary range begins at $55,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

Benefits

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
