  • This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
  • This position is referred to as a Simulation Lab Technician, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Instructional Lab Coordinator, Intermediate.


Job Description

Under the direction of the Associate Director, Simulation, the Simulation Lab Technician is primarily responsible for integrating, maintaining, and operating the computer and audio/video (A/V) technology including the mannequin and surrounding simulation lab equipment and the nursing skills labs. The Simulation Technician manages simulation room, mannequin set-up and take down, application of moulage, and recording and playback of simulations as well as maintaining the Skills Lab.

This position supports Interprofessional Education (IPE), immersive simulation experiences, and other scheduled patient simulation learning activities. This position has no responsibility for providing direct care to patients. This position collaborates and works closely with the Simulationist and Skills Lab.

Skills Lab Operations - 40%
  • Monitors and schedules use, signing out, and movement of skills lab equipment.
  • Implements, updates, and monitors skills lab policies, procedures, use, and operation.
  • Maintains the lab inventory, ensures the safe storage and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Orients instructors in lab procedures, location and use of materials, and operation of equipment.
  • Assists staff to appropriately integrate lab operations, obtain maximum utilization for the most efficient expenditures, and assists in moderating student costs.
  • Continuously updates and refines skills lab experiences based on identified needs and to serve as a resource for faculty in classroom/lab activities.

Simulation Operations and Support - 30%
  • Maintains current knowledge of simulation/lab equipment catalogs and operation manuals.
  • Programs simulator software to model simulator's physiological response to instructor specification.
  • Responsible for operating patient simulators and cameras for the duration of simulations, along with maintaining the audio-visual and debriefing systems during simulations.
  • Provides theatrical production (costuming and moulage) for simulation scenarios as requested, such as mixing fake body fluids and creating wounds.
  • Collaborates with supervisor to organize, maintain, and restock skills lab and simulation laboratory supplies.
  • Provides recommendations on equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Sets up and maintains surgical/procedural simulators along with computer-based training programs.
  • Collects video data through the AV system, and disseminates data used for ongoing research or grant requirements.
  • Maintains simulation activities and protects student learner confidentiality within a hospital or medical setting.
  • Provides theatrical production (costuming and moulage) for simulation scenarios as requested, such as mixing fake body fluids and creating wounds.

Simulator and Lab Maintenance - 25%
  • Responsible for maintaining and repairing all simulation equipment, including: Patient simulators, computers, monitors, and a variety of medical equipment.
  • Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and contacts vendors as needed.
  • Provides technical support for task trainers and multimedia peripherals including, Beds/examination tables, headwalls, patient monitors, medication dispensing systems and vital sign monitors.
  • Provides technical assistance, support and training to faculty, instructors, and staff in the use of simulation equipment.
  • Sets up and takes down simulation laboratory equipment.
  • May be responsible for quick simulation lab set up, requiring turnaround within one hour for rotating student groups.
  • Monitors and assures appropriate standards of lab cleanliness, provides for equipment maintenance, repair, and replacement.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment, complies with college health and safety policies, practices, and programs in keeping with occupational health & safety legislation and regulations.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates or undergraduate bachelor's degree.
  • 2 -4 years of relevant experience.
  • A combination of related experience, education and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare discipline or Medical Technology.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) or commitment to obtain CHSOS within two years of hire date.
  • Experience in a Lab Setting.
  • Extensive experience in computer technology and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with PC and Mac platforms.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge
  • Clinical knowledge and experience working in a healthcare related field such as EMT, paramedic, or other allied health profession certification and training.
  • Knowledge of operation of standard audio-visual equipment: projectors, microphones, portable screens, media players, etc.

Skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Skills in operating a PC and Mac with experience in MS Office.
  • Mechanical skills to competently maintain and use equipment in the simulation center.
  • Organizational and time management skills to keep materials in order.
  • Track various projects, maintain files, and follow through assignments to completion.

Abilities
  • Maintains confidentiality of information.
  • Quickly learns new technology.
  • Expresses technical information clearly and simply to non-technical persons.
  • Models professional standards, including customer service, collaboration, communication, excellence, attendance and related.


Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Salary range begins at $47,634. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits.
