Position Summary:

Upward Bound is a federally funded program that provides services designed to improve academic, career, and personal skills to prepare first-generation (neither parent has a four-year degree) and low-income high school students to be successful in high school and college. The Instructor will be responsible for assisting students in enhancing their skills in all subject areas that will prepare 9th -12th grade students for their current academic classes, and the SAT/ACT exams.

Reporting Relationship:

Reports to the Director or Coordinator, TRiO Upward Bound

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Instructors will instruct assigned areas of curriculum. Curriculum includes content areas in English, Mathematics, Science, nd Foreign Language.
  2. Provide a welcoming and positive learning environment for all students in the Upward Bound summer program.
  3. Effectively communicate recommendations and concerns to Upward Bound Coordinator
  4. Provide feedback and encouragement to participants during enrichment activities
  5. Supervise and instruct all assigned students inside and outside of the classroom setting.
  6. Enforces and abides by Prairie State College Upward Bound rules and regulations.
  7. Prepares lessons and course syllabus.
  8. Develops and supports a rigorous course of study.
  9. Conducts diagnostic exams at the beginning and end of the Summer Program(June-July 2023).
  10. Assigns homework and/or class projects daily.
  11. Records student attendance, behavior, and grades.
  12. Completes final evaluation of student progress.
  13. SAT/ACT teaching experience.
  14. While the above is a description of the essential functions of the position; other duties, related and unrelated to the above, may be assigned and therefore required.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, depending on program needs.
  2. Work schedule is subject to change depending on department needs.
  3. If recommended for the position, applicant must be fingerprinted for a background investigation(at the college’s expense).; and be cleared to work with children.
  4. Commit to working a set schedule for6 weeks during the summer component.
  5. Certification or provisional certification to teach in the subject area or currently teaching/advising at the secondary/college level or corporate training experience.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
  7. Present acceptable documentation proving your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the United States (per1986 Immigration Act)
  8. Must consent to and submit a signed authorization form for a limited background check prior to offer of employment

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree in English, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Language, Computer technology, or Career Counseling.
  2. Strong academic focus in one or more of the following: English, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus/Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Spanish, Communication, SAT test Preparation, Career Exploration, and College Exploration.
  3. Experience designing academic curriculum or corporate professional development components.
  4. One year of full time or equivalent part time experience providing direct services in a secondary educational/social service environment working with at at-risk students(teaching or tutoring) or one year of full time or part time experience in providing corporate education.
  5. Experience and knowledge regarding computer programs Microsoft Office and instructional technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience designing secondary curriculum.
  2. Two years of experience providing direct services in a secondary educational/social service environment working with at-risk students(teaching or tutoring).

Anticipated Work Hours and Days:

Part-time hours vary based on course schedule and component. courses offered or assigned maybe 60 to 90 minutes at length and meet between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Each content instructor will have two sessions of class per day.
