Job Description

This Research Technician will support all reasearch in the Pearson Laboratory Research Group in the Pathogen & Microbiome Institute to perform grant-funded research work to enable the Pearson Lab to complete research objectives.

The Pearson Lab is is currently funded to perform the following tasks, all of which will be supported by this Research Technician:
  1. Determine transmission patterns of Staphylococcus aureus.
  2. This entails collecting samples from humans, DNA extraction, culturing, and sequencing.
  • Determining the causes of fecal contaminatioin in Oak Creek and Fossil Creek.
  • This entails processing samples, DNA extraction, and molecular characterization.
  • Screen pine tree samples for resistance to blister rust.
  • This entails developing qPCR assays, DNA extraction, and running the assay against hundreds of samples. Data curation will be a major aspect of this work that will be above and beyond the performance of these laboratory tasks.

  • The Pearson Lab is also expecting to be awarded a large NIH award aimed at determining the transmission of Leptospira in Ecuador. This Research Technician will support the receipt and processing of samples.

    As the Pearson Lab pursues other funding opportunities, the Research Technician will be instrumental in generating preliminary data to support such applications. This will require extreme flexibility, creativity, and innovation to adapt existing knowledge to be applied to novel situations.

    The Research Technician will support the lab work of a graduate student, a full time Research Coordinator, and at least three undergraduate researchers. This will require helping to provide appropriate training, scheduling work activities, and monitoring/ensuring the quality of work produced by this team.

    Research Support - 50%
    • Work with Sara Maltinsky and other members of the Pearson research group to perform grant funded research to complete research objectives.
    • This will entail performing microbiological and molecular research including DNA extractions, qPCR, culturing, and post-amp analysis.

    Lab Support - 20%
    • Assist with keeping group specific fridge/freezers/samples organized, ordering supplies, and maintaining general or assigned equipment.

    Analytical Support - 20%
    • Assist with maintaining and organizing data files, lab protocols, and other paperwork or literature related to research.

    Collaboration - 10%
    • Communicating ideas and results to the lab group and project affiliates. General science communication with people from a variety of backgrounds and experience levels.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment.
    • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with culturing a variety of microbes, especially Staphylococcus aureus.
    • Experience with molecular genetic techniques such as qPCR, primer design, next generation sequencing library construction, and DNA extraction and purification.
    • Experience with King Fisher high-throughput DNA exteraction protocols.
    • Experience with genotype data.
    • Strong writing, editing, and oral communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work individually, in variously sized groups and across groups.
    • Supervisory experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently on multiple projects concurrently and successfully.
    • Strong analytical or computational experience.


    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    • Knowledge, skill, and experience working in a BSL-2 environment.
    • Knowledge and experience performing bacterial culturing of S. aureus and other bacteria.
    • Knowledge and experience performing and analyzing qPCR assessments of S. aureus and other bacterial pathogens.
    • Knowledge and experience performing DNA extractions of S. aureus and other bacteria.


    Background Information

    This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.     Salary

    Anticipated salary range is $37,584 to $45,023. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

    FLSA Status

    This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

    Benefits

    This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
