Job Summary:

Eastern Washington University is currently seeking a Utility Worker 2 - Grounds Maintenance that will perform semi-skilled work in constructing, maintaining or repairing buildings, facilities, utility tunnels, sewer systems, grounds and equipment. Under general supervision, maintain and repair roads, utility systems, parking facilities and institution grounds. This is a new position and an excellent opportunity to join a growing department.

  • Position will operate motorized equipment such as automobiles, trucks, including dump trucks, forklifts, backhoes, small tractors and front-end loaders, street cleaning equipment, trailers, trenchers and turf renovation equipment.
  • Position will be involved in sprinkler irrigation and the general maintenance of a grounds maintenance program.
  • Position will assist in projects and duties executed by Equipment Operator 2’s.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires continuous walking and maintaining of stamina during workday. Frequent sitting, standing, bending over, reaching overhead, pushing or pulling, repetitive use of hands/arms, repetitive use of legs, lifting of up to 50 pounds, carrying of up to 50 pounds, eye/hand coordination. Successful candidate must be able to pass a pre-placement physical.
  • This position works continuously outside. The work environment varies in temperature between very hot, and very cold. This position works in high places in an environment that can be dry, wet, dirty and/or dusty.
  • Must have essential physical and mental capabilities in the following: Interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, follow directions, comprehension, calculating, reading, writing, speaking, evaluating, mathematics, organizing and innovation.
  • Must be a competent and safe equipment operator since operation is required throughout campus with a great deal of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
  • This position requires a valid driver’s license.
  • This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. Successful applicant will be required to pass a background check prior to beginning employment.
  • All new employees will comply with EWU Immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR before beginning work at EWU. Waivers for the immunization requirements are available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Physical ability to do required work.

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • 1 year of experience in equipment operation, grounds maintenance, or relatable experience in construction related field.
  • Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility and/or diversity.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience as a Utility Worker 2 or Equipment Operator.
  • Holds a valid Washington State Driver’s License with a CDL Class A endorsement.
  • One or more years of experience operating a front end loader, backhoe, skid steer, or street cleaning equipment.

Responsibility / Duty:

Under direct supervision, perform routine maintenance of institution grounds, such as weeding, mowing lawns and raking leaves. Prepare and maintain campus grounds and/or work in greenhouse or nursery. Prepare soil for planting seed, sod, turf, plants, trees and shrubs. Seed, mow, irrigate, sweep, fertilize, top dress, edge and maintain lawns. Rake and remove leaves; pull and hoe weeds. All trash removal from outside containers and ground. May assist in planting seed, sod, bulbs, shrubs, and trees; assist in transplanting seedlings or other nursery stock. May assist in pruning, spraying and fertilizing trees and shrubs. Assist in the installation and repair of lawn sprinkler system components. Remove debris, leaves, brush, snow and ice from areas such as walks, stairs, roads, ramps and parking facilities.

Use a variety of manual tools and equipment, such as rakes, hand edgers, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows, weeding forks, hoes, pruning shears and pesticide sprayers. Clean, service, adjust, and make repairs on tools and equipment; Operate power tools and equipment, such as electric and gas engine driven compressors, large mowers, pneumatic tamper, jackhammer, snowplows and portable pumps.
